interiOr finishes C-teC's xfP fire alarm Panel at new vets

C-Tec's powerful XFP analogue addressable fire panel has been installed at a pioneering new veteri- nary hospital in Glasgow city centre. Situated in the main entrance area, the one-loop LPCB- approved 16- zone panel provides total protection at the state-of-the-art facility. The panel is linked to an array of Apollo XP95 detectors located throughout the high-tech hospital. A two-minute delay has been programmed into each panel which

means that if a call point is activated accidentally, the alarm can be investigat- ed before the panel goes into full alarm. This investigation period is essential in a medical environment particularly during surgery times when a false alarm can cost thousands of pounds.

182 NEW DEAF FIRE ALERTER

DMS (Deaf Message Service) is a NEW fire safety product from Fireco Ltd that informs deaf or hard of hearing people when the fire alarm sounds in a public place like a supermarket, shopping or leisure centre.

The DMS unit is easily installed in under half an hour. A user’s mobile is connected to DMS by sending one text message (SMS) with the relevant

location code, and when the fire alarm sounds an SMS is sent to their mobile phone to let them know the fire alarm is sounding.

GOLD CUP TOWN IN NEED OF TREATMENT

As an historic town, Cheltenham is full of historic buildings which demand particular treatment and the town is Mainpoint Fire Protection’s main area of operation. Alan Gatenby, Mainpoint’s Fire Protection Consultant has been recommending the Detectomat Wireless detect system for several years and finds it very reliable and particularly appreciates its suitability for heritage buildings. Martin & Co, jewellers with a history going back to George III’s reign, who make the Gold Cup for the famous Cheltenham event, selected Mainpoint to install their fire alarms having been impressed by one of their recent installations where they had used the Detectomat system. In the design and installation of Fire Detection Systems for historic and listed buildings, it is far preferable to avoid hard wiring between units by specifying a radio- linked, wireless solution like the Detectomat system, in which each unit trans- mits data by radio frequency to a receiver.

Retrofitting Audio-Visual equipment into existing buildings can be a challenge - especially if there is a need to keep the equipment out of sight when not in use. Add to that the high profile that can go with a government building, and finding a solution can be even more difficult. When Draper Group Ltd was approached with just such a request for the UK Parliament’s Portcullis House in Westminster, London, the company had just the solution. Far from being intimidated, however, Draper Group Ltd Operation Manager Wakeley Gage saw it as an encouraging challenge. “The screens would be fitted into already installed media management structures,” according to Gage, “so we had to take a close look at which screen model would best fit the purpose.” The Draper Group Ltd team installed the custom screens into the existing media management cases, so they are completely hidden when not in use. 187
