“Hillingdon is bucking the national trend to invest in facilities that will enable our residents to achieve their aspirations” Cllr Henry Higgins
council’s chosen operator for the centre is the charitable social enterprise Greenwich Leisure Ltd (GLL). Cllr Henry Higgins, Hillingdon council cabinet member
for culture, sport and leisure says: “This brand-new facility will truly be a unique community hub, benefiting residents in Hillingdon as well as encouraging visitors from other boroughs. “Incorporating state-of-the-art facilities, including a fully
fitted gymnastics facility, and large, modern library, Hillingdon is bucking the national trend to invest in facilities that will enable our residents to achieve their aspirations, both sporting and academic. Along with the Hillingdon Sports and Leisure Complex we really do have some of the best sports pro- vision around and a legacy for future generations.” Residents from the borough were given the first chance to
try out the centre from 1 June, before July 8, when it was offi- cially opened by council leader Cllr Ray Puddifoot. Locals will continue to benefit from the Hillingdon First residents
privilege card giving them an average 10 per cent discount on many of the centre’s activities, as well as reduced prices at a number of other council-owned facilities and more than 300 local businesses. Added to the council’s £20.2 million investment in the
complex was funding of £300,000 from the Football Foundation and leisure GLL towards the cost of the all- weather football pitches. Hillingdon put the construction contract out to tender and GB Building Solutions emerged with the winning bid. Martin Doe, GB’s operations director for the Central and
South region, recalls: “There was some minor demolition to do, but the majority of the ground was parkland – but we weren’t the only project on site at the time. For instance, other contractors created an all-weather games field, for which we built the changing rooms. “We added a second outdoor multi-purpose games area. The existing one remained in use throughout the project.
