Construction and Balfour Beatty Engineering Services who together form the construction joint venture company. Mechanical and electrical engineering services account for approximately 50 per cent of the cost of these state of the art facilities. The Trust has retained responsibility for the provision of all clinical services, awarding Balfour-Beatty WorkPlace a 35-year facilities management contract to provide cleaning, linen and laundry, catering, security, portering, main- tenance, waste management, pest control, car parking and other services. “Balfour Beatty can offer, through all its operational compa-


nies, a one-stop solution to PFI projects,” says Consort Healthcare project director Chris Funnell. “Not many compa- nies can do that. Often they’ll have a construction company but not have an FM contractor with the necessary depth to deliver all these services. Balfour Beatty WorkPlace is one of the leading FM providers in this country, and Balfour Beatty Construction’s portfolio is such that it can tackle large-scale


projects without having to further joint venture with other companies to spread the risk. Then there’s Parsons Brinckerhoff – which is owned by Balfour Beatty – to co-ordinate CDM [construction, design and management] regulations.” Winning the Pinderfields contract entailed drawing on the


most effective features of the group’s nine other major hospital projects. Cost was a primary factor, but bidders were also
