CPD, Planning & Design

Brett Landscaping has developed a new RIBA Approved CPD presentation entitled; ‘Designing for Specialist Containment Kerbs’ to inform architects, engineers and other specifiers on the range of issues surrounding specialist kerb systems and the role that they play as a passive safety feature, helping to minimise risk for all users of the public highway. First introduced in 1962, Brett’s Trief containment kerb system provides a clear physical warning to drivers of vehicles which are straying from the highway, prompting them to take immediate evasive action by steering away. The kerb’s concave recess also ‘traps’ the bulge in tyre sidewalls, preventing vehicles from climbing up the kerb and ensuring that they do not leave the carriageway. Since its introduc- tion, the Trief system has been delivering high levels of vehicle and pedestri- an protection and is widely recognised as having made a substantial contri- bution to British road safety. t 0845 60 80 579 www.brettlandscaping.co.uk

Brett Landscaping has developed a new RIBA Approved CPD presentation entitled; ‘Specialist Bus Boarding Kerb Design and Usage’. The presentation serves to inform local authorities, architects, engineers and other specifiers on the range of issues surrounding specialist kerb systems and the role that they play in improving access on public transport schemes. Packed with illustrations, photographs, diagrams and case studies, the CPD presentation has been structured to lead the audience along an informative path which explains why we need specialist bus boarding kerbs, what they are and how they work. It then goes on to look at their application in urban design, how they can enhance public access, as well as discussing the manufacture and safe installation process. Specialist bus boarding kerbs help to ensure that public transport is seen as offering a user friendly and accessible alterna- tive to the car. t 0845 60 80 579 www.brettlandscaping.co.uk

135 136 MENTAL HEALTH UNIT TO BRING BENEFITS

The results of medical research have helped Race Cottam Associates create a new £11m mental health unit at Walton Hospital in Chesterfield, that is designed to bring psychological benefits to the elderly dementia patients it accommodates. The new accommodation is housed in two wings which feature a figure-of-eight layout that encloses a courtyard garden which can be used by the patients. Each of the linked wings incorporates 24

en-suite patient bedrooms plus a range of ancillary accommodation and shared therapeutic spaces. The project extends Race Cottam’s impressive reputation for delivering innovative and sustainable design solutions for NHS projects.

137 RINGWAY HELPS TO KEEP THINGS MOVING

Bus passengers travelling to Birmingham’s airport and the NEC will enjoy faster journey times and better facilities thanks to a major improvement scheme now being delivered by Ringway Infrastructure Services. A newly renovated inter- change at Birmingham International Railway Station, an airport bus-only link to a nearby parkway, road widening, new cycle paths and foot- ways are just some of the improvements involved in

the £11million ANITA project – Airport & NEC Integrated Transport Access. Thanks to Ringway’s ingenuity and experience, key design decisions were made which impacted on the success of the project.

140 WASTE PROJECT ACHIEVES OUTSTANDING

The official government advisory body on archi- tecture, urban design and public spaces has praised the architectural design for a major new waste pro- cessing project to be built in London. This is a sig- nificant success for project architects, Race Cottam Associates, who created the designs for the new Thames Gateway Power building on behalf of Cyclamax Holdings Limited . The CABE assessment review praised the ‘crisp and clear

design approach’ of the ‘simple and elegant box’ created by Race Cottam. The completed building is also currently on target to achieve a coveted BREEAM ‘Excellent’ rating.
