There’s a bright golden Hayes
The London Borough of Hillingdon has unveiled an impressive sports and leisure complex in Hayes, Middlesex, as James Pringle reports
T
hese may be recessionary times, but the London Borough of Hillingdon has given a major boost to its amenities with July’s opening of the Botwell Green
Sports and Leisure Centre in Hayes. Replacing a tired and uninspiring 1970s facility just across
the road, the distinctive U-shaped complex has floor area of 7,359 sq m and includes an eight-lane, 25m swimming pool and a curved-sided teaching pool; a four-court sports hall; an 80-plus fitness suite packed with exercise machines; and a studio for group exercise classes. Also included are a library
with brand-new Apple Mac computers and WiFi internet; a Starbucks café; a crèche with an outdoor play area; and parking for 51 vehicles. Midway through the construction project, additional
funding became available and plans were adapted to incorpo- rate a £2 million fully fitted, state-of-the-art, British national standard gymnastics hall. There are special disabled changing and toilet facilities, a
fitness centre adapted for wheelchair users, as well as a pool hoist and wheelchair access to poolside amenities, and the
