163 net ZerO energy OffiCe BuilDing venture

Daikin Europe N.V. is joining major European research institutions in developing economically feasible net zero energy building (nZEB) concepts based on heat pumps. These research institutions, including Manchester University, will be partners in this exceptional cross-border project, coordinat- ed by Environment Application Research at Daikin Europe. The project is scheduled for com- pletion in July 2010 at Herten, Germany. Daikin

Europe and the Zeller Group, a German heat pump and air conditioning expert and Daikin equipment installer products, will construct the house and install the various technologies and monitoring equipment. Tours for interest- ed parties will begin July 2010 and run for 12 months.

165 THE ENERSHIELD AIR BARRIER

The Enershield air barrier reduces energy loss through open doorways by using an accurate flow of unheated; high volume; high speed air to create up to a 90% seal over openings producing a “virtual door”.

With the model range suiting openings up to 11.5m high, the Enershield is relevant for a wide range of industrial applications.

In retail and leisure, Enershield offers replacement technology for traditional “air curtains” which use heated air to provide comfort heating at entrances but are less effective at preventing energy loss.

of gleaming white ceramic granite has been used to create ventilated

facades for the new £12 million ward complex at Chesterfield Royal Hospital. The prefabricated panels were supplied by Shackerley and have been installed using the company’s Queen’s Award winning Sureclad Access System. The facades were specified by The Manser Practice and installed by Task Contracts for GB Building Solutions (Wakefield). Project Architect Guy Barlow was responsible for delivering the new wards for the Chesterfield Royal Hospital NHS Foundation Trust: “This new three-storey building significantly extends the hospital’s capacity, providing almost a hundred additional beds,” he said, “We were seeking a simple aesthetic, with crisp clean lines and flush glazing, but with a very high quality finish. As this practice has considerable experience of using Shackerley’s ventilated facades, the Sureclad system was an ideal solu- tion. The decision was clinched when Shackerley introduced us a new style of panel which hadn’t previously been used in this country in an exterior cladding system. The ‘almost-white’, monochromatic coloured panel with its polished surface and high degree of reflectivity was just what we were looking for.”
