Julie, Leanne and Emilie Speakers Rotary Meeting 12-Feb-09 F
or a number of years Hall
Mead School has been supporting the work of Kid‘s Alive International by sending students to different parts of the world so they can work with and for the children in the orphan- ages that have been set up by this great charity. The trips are funded by the students themselves and they spend much time raising money.
O L
ne thing they do every year is to pack
bags at Sainsbury‘s. This is not easy work and not all the cus- tomers are sympathetic to their cause. Fortunately a large majority are and a lot of money has been raised. Another activity involves the making of cakes and selling them at school during break times.
ast year we had a talk by Julie Moore, a teacher at Hall Mead ,
who has dedicated herself to support- ing the work of Kids Alive . Her talk then was about a trip to Kenya. The talk she gave was so interesting
w O
e invited her to come back again when
she had another trip to talk about.
n the 12th. of February Julie came to our club with two of the pupils who had been part of the team
that visited an orphanage in The Dominican Republic. Julie gave us a brief introduction and some background information and then she handed over the talk to
Leanne Perry and Emilie Whyman. As Julie clicked her way through the PowerPoint Presentation the two girls treated us to a most interesting de- scription of their experiences. Young people often get a bad press these days but Leanne and Emilie were a credit to their par- ents ,to Julie and the School. How many of us ,as teenagers, could have stood before a bunch of elderly folk and talked with confi- dence and assurance. It is
trips such as these that have opened their young eyes to the hardships and poverty of children in other parts of the world that has given these young people the confidence to not just talk to us but to open our eyes and to also keep us thoroughly entertained.
A T
t the end of the talk President Raj took the opportunity to present
the girls with a cheque for £500 which was half the proceeds of our Playathon which we held at the Queens Theatre last July. This was money raised by children of the bor- ough who got spon- sorship for playing
and singing on that day.
hank you so much Julie, Leanne and Emilie and good luck for your
future projects. 13
