Angola’s capital Luanda in a bid to accommodate the growing number of tourists and Asian gamblers to the oil producing nation.

The multi-million dollar facelift has turned Tivoli Casino into the biggest gaming and entertainment site in Angola. Located in one of Luanda’s most exclusive streets and comprised of two floors, the casino has a clean-lined decoration with a strong Asian influence that includes two giant golden dragons. Soft-spoken waitresses and dealers are dressed in traditional Chinese shirts in a sign that Angola’s close ties with Asia go way beyond the oil and construction sectors.
“It’s a sign that Angola’s relationship with Asia is rapidly expanding into the entertainment business as well,” said Tiago Vilela de Sousa, marketing director for Casinos de Angola.
Vilela de Sousa said that the changes to the Tivoli Casino was the result of a recent trip to Asia’s gambling mecca of Macau and several studies on the future of the Angolan entertainment and gaming industry.
“After the trip to Macau it became clear to me that we need to make our casinos more appealing for our visitors and in Tivoli’s particular case one way to do this is by adding a certain Asian-flair to the decor, “ said Vilela de Sousa. “We want people to have fun at our casinos and for that to happen people need to feel good in a modern and upscale environment that are now at the Tivoli casino”.
The Tivoli Casino facelift is part of a $55 million investment project by Casinos de Angola to open two new casinos and improve the image of its existing venues, which include Casino Marinha and several gamming rooms in Luanda. The casino operator recently opened a new casino in the mountainous city of Lubango - Casino Olimpia.
Casinos de Angola, through its gambling operator Plurijogos, will invest $55 million in the next three years to promote the gambling and entertainment industry in Angola in a bid to bolster the country’s image abroad. The investment will be carried out through the company’s own capital and some loans.

Part of this investment will be used to promote the country’s cultural, entertainment and leisure activities. The main goal is to promote the local culture and at the same time bring world - renowned artists to Angola.
The Casinos de Angola brand will in 2010 embody what Plurijogos promised to become when it started out in 1992 - to be Angola’s largest gambling and entertainment business.
This new brand is meant to meet the demands of modern times, such as the need to provide high- end entertainment for the gambling industry and all other related activities.
Since its birth in the mountainous city of Lubango, under the name Ferser, Plurijogos has grown to become a major player in Angola’s economy. Today, Casinos de Angola, through Plurijogos, aims to position itself as the launching pad for tourism and contribute to a positive image of Angola abroad and the lifestyle that the country can provide to foreigners.
Blessed by a warm all-year round climate, cultural diversity and robust economic growth, Angola is in a strong position to clinch a piece of the global tourism market. The nation is rebuilding infrastructure to satisfy demand for the tourism sector and the company is working in line with the Angolan government’s strategy to promote the sector.
With a total of 650 workers, Casinos de Angola predicts an increase in direct and indirect jobs of about 1,500 workers, 98 percent of whom will be Angolan nationals.
Social responsibility also features high on Casinos de Angola’s agenda. The goal is to help provide social justice for those in need.
On that note, Casinos de Angola launched a programme in January to subsidise part of its employees expenses in health, child services, school and also provide scholarships and training in foreign languages.
Casinos de Angola is responsible for running the Casino Marinha, Tivoli and Imperador gambling rooms in Luanda along with the Olimpia Casino in Lubango.
