Until The Wharf opened in 1995, the


Burnham, Debbie Heale, Jo Lunt and Jane Pengelly were described as a class of schoolgirls who put in convincing performances. Sally Reid skilfully played the difficult role of Miss Mackay, the prim and spiteful headmistress, with severe realism. John Wyatt and Stuart Waterworth as schoolmasters also gave excellent performances.


We are delighted that many people who have participated


in Tavonians’ productions have gone on to train for professional careers in the performing arts, or to teach them to others. Over the years there have been occasional “tours” of shows as far afield as Calstock, Lewdown, Postbridge and Fowey. In 1960, rehearsals took place in a large room at the rear of 77 West Street and scenery was stored at Abbey Mead. Later, the vacant Abbey Garage building was used until it was demolished to make way for Godolphin House. Nowadays we meet


and rehearse mainly at the Guide Hall. Public appeals for permanent rehearsal and storage space have been made quite frequently over the years, sadly to no avail...yet! However, we are very grateful to all of the people, businesses and organisations who have continued to support us for so long. Over the years the Tavonians have helped to raise funds for local and national charities, through donations and regularly taking part in the Lions’ procession.

anniversary, we have toured ‘The Hound of the Baskervilles’ to Lydford, Meavy, Tavistock and Princetown as part of the Tavistock Arts Festival, and are now planning our November production, the stage version of
