Queen’s Award Sinead McLaughlin
The Board of the Londonderry Chamber of Commerce is pleased to announce the appointment of Sinead McLaughlin to the position of chief executive. Sinead brings with her a wealth of management experience having worked within a variety of business sectors over a number of years.
The president Jim Sammon said “Sinead is the former business operations manager of this Chamber and has more recently been acting chief executive Sinead brings great energy and talent to the Chamber and I have no doubt that with her input as chief executive that the Chamber will grow and flourish in the years ahead.” Sinead says “I will have a strong commercial focus and my central and most important strength is my commitment to our members.
My key priority is to represent our membersʼ best interests. I have a great deal of experience in the provision of valuable services to our powerful business network. I will also ensure that members become more involved in programmes and activities in order to ensure maximum value “. The new chief executive indicated that she is looking forward to building upon existing partnerships. “I am keen to develop further strategic relations with our key stakeholders and other business alliances throughout Ireland. I hope to contribute to these business alliances in an effort to identify and address issues which will support positive economic development and business growth.
Chamber president concluded “there are many challenges ahead but with a strong Board, strong chief executive and strong proactive members we can make a positive impact for all the businesses in the region.

Ken Nelson , chief executive of LEDCOM is the sole Northern Ireland recipient of the 2010 Queenʼs Award for Enterprise Promotion. The Award was introduced in 2004 to recognise individuals who have played an outstanding and significant role in promoting the growth of business enterprise entrepreneurial skills and attitudes in the UK. Each year up to ten standard Awards and a single Lifetime Achievement Award are made across the UK. The 2010 Awards were announced last week and cited Ken Nelson for his role in the development of LEDCOM since he joined it in 1992 and the work it has done to support enterprise and business start up and growth. His role as chairman of Enterprise Northern Ireland since 2006 as well as a number of voluntary roles were highlighted in the Queenʼs Award. “I am honoured and humbled to have the Queenʼs Award for Enterprise promotion conferred on me by her Majesty. I also regard it as a tribute to the whole LEDCOM organisation – the dedicated voluntary directors and the
excellent staff team I am proud to lead. In LEDCOMʼs 25th anniversary year, this national recognition is a great encouragement to us as we strive to support economic development and improve the quality of life for local people”, said Ken Nelson.
Over 25 years, LEDCOM has actively assisted the start up of around 800 new enterprises including 80 social enterprises, as well as being involved in a wide range of economic development initiatives.
Chartered Accountants focus on new economic strategy for Northern ireland
Northern Irelandʼs Chartered Accountants today pledged to lend their expertise to assist in the development of a new economic strategy for Northern Ireland.
Speaking at the Chartered Accountants in Business Lunch at Malone House in Belfast, Chartered Accountants Ulster Society chairman Richard Gardiner said that the time was right for the development of a strategy which would leave the local economy best placed to benefit from global economic recovery.
Richard Gardiner welcomed guest speaker David Sterling, permanent secretary of the Department of Enterprise, Trade and Investment, who provided an update on the actions undertaken following the Independent Review of Economic Policy. Mr. Sterling outlined the significant steps already taken by the Enterprise minister, Arlene Foster in setting up the Executive Sub‑ Committee on the Economy, which has been established as a joined‑up approach by the

Executive to develop an economic strategy. A new Economic Advisory Group, chaired by independent economist Kate Barker CBE, has also been established to provide expert advice, from the fields of business, skills and economics, to the Enterprise minister. Mr. Sterling went on to explain that the primary focus, over the next few months, will be the development of an economic strategy that can inform the next Programme for Government, in March 2011.
