McAvoy wins at new hospital
Over 120 companies from across the island of Ireland recently attended the final event of the current phase of InterTradeIrelandʼs Network and Getwork programme at the Waterfront Hall, Belfast. The event was designed to maximise opportunities for cross‑ border trade and combined one‑to‑one meetings with large buying organisations, networking and information seminars. The Network and Getwork programme, delivered jointly by the Northern Ireland Chamber of Commerce (NICC) and Dublin Chamber of Commerce, and in partnership with the Cork, Galway, Limerick, Londonderry, Newry, and Waterford Chambers, on behalf of InterTradeIreland, has generated much success with participant companies who attended the early events winning contracts of up to £40,000 in value.
The event held in May was one of the largest Network and Getwork events to date with more than 90 one‑to‑one meetings being held with the buyers from the construction and public sectors: Bam Contractors; McLaughlin & Harvey; the Patton Group, HSC Buying Organisation; Newry and Mourne District Council; Northern Ireland Prison Service;
Southern Education and Library Board; and University of Ulster.
The event also saw companies such as Sentel Independent; Sperrin Metals; Zing Pod; Balmoral Furniture; Herbst, Authentic Solutions; McKinty Wright Solicitors; the Energy Savers; K3 Business Technology; Shredbank; Heartsine; Robinson Services; Message Pad and Secure Ring Security show casing their products and service through exhibition space.
In addition the participating companies were given advice on growing their businesses during recession by Philip Bain of Shredbank and a workshop on joint tendering from Martin McBride of Envision Management Consultants. Liam Nellis, chief executive of
InterTradeIreland said: “In these challenging times, InterTradeIreland is committed to helping SMEs identify new cross‑border markets and business opportunities. Our range of cross‑border programmes and initiatives such as Network and Getwork open doors for small companies hoping to expand their business throughout the island of Ireland, while at the same time enabling them to build beneficial business relationships with other companies in their sector.”
Dungannon‑base McAvoy Group, a chamber member, is supplying 175 shower room pods to the New Acute Hospital near Enniskillen, which is currently being constructed by FCCElliott Healthcare. The contract for pods is worth over £1.2 million. Through a competitive tender, McAvoy, a specialist in off‑site buildings, won the contract to supply the pods, which are provided tiled and with full shower systems. The hospital is being built by a construction partnership between P. Elliott, based in Ireland, and FCC of Spain.
Steve Harper, McAvoy Sales and Marketing Manager, commenting on the contract, said: “The FCCElliott consortium is working to an extremely tight timetable. In order to help with the construction timetable, pods were selected as a modern method of construction. Our shower room pods will ensure factory finished quality and will meet the stringent standards required for hospitals.”
McAvoy Group developed the shower room pod in conjunction with FCCElliott and their architects Anshen & Allen. The pod has been developed from the original tender stage design through to the approved construction design. The pods are fully HTM Compliant which regulates among other things, the mechanical and electrical fit out required for hospital installations.
The pod is designed as a wet room shower
room. The floor has an anti‑slip vinyl laid to fall to a stainless steel floor drain. The wall covering is also vinyl, which ensures there is a complete vinyl seal floor to ceiling. The panels are fitted at the WC and basin wall to ensure quick and easy access to the plumbing services. Anti scald valves were used in the shower and basin mixers to prevent against scalding, with flow return plumbing work to guard against legionella in the hot water pipes.
McAvoy Group, which has factories in Dungannon and Lisburn, has been contracted to manufacture and install the pods. The process involved staff having to adhere to the strictest health and safety requirements for themselves and their equipment whilst onsite.
