Green at Heart By Maria Flanagan Now summer has arrived (finally!) there are plenty of things to do. With the warm sun and long lazy days that August brings also comes fresh local fruits and foods. This is the perfect time of year to start eating food which is in season. Vegetables, such as new potatoes, peas and mushrooms. Fruits such as raspberries, strawberries and blueberries are ripe and ready to be used in summer smoothies and recipes. ‘Abel and Cole’ gives a wide selection of seasonal foods organically grown which can be delivered to your doorstep. Go to www.abelandcole.co.uk. People wanting to start growing their own produce should start now by planting things like kale, parsley and potatoes, ready for autumn. However, there is another way to eat in season without having to plant a thing. A pick your own farm is an excellent way to get the family together and enjoy a fun day out. Places such as ‘Greenbank Farm’ near Carnforth are great to purchase some of your very own gooseberries, raspberries, redcurrants and more. For other pick your own farms near you- www.pickyourownfarms.org.uk Not only is eating food that is in season good for you, it also helps to cut down on food miles. Fruits out of season may have to be brought over from as far as New Zealand to fill the supermarkets. Also, by using a pick your own you are supporting local employment and community. Sum mer fruit and veg jokes: What do you call two rows of vegetables? A dual cabbage way What is a vampire's favourite fruit? A neck-tarine!
