TALES FROM THE HARDWARE STORE We’ve recently enjoyed a few days down in Dorset. The weather wasn’t brilliant and could only be described as ‘mixed’… comprising sunshine, showers, heavy winds and warm breezes, and all that every 30 minutes or so! Nevertheless, we all had a great time catching up with friends and enjoying the Speedway at Poole. The weather didn’t lend itself to us spending time on the beach, so we found we spent more time inland, exploring towns which we might not have got around to visiting had the weather been hot. Towns in and around Dorset are more what I consider to be ‘traditional’ towns…. they have retained a rich variety of independent retailers, which blend nicely with the high street names and the modestly sized supermarkets. Poole itself does have several giant superstores strategically placed at key points around the town, but the old High Street retains much of it’s original charm as historical buildings have been lovingly restored and serve to enhance further the town as a major visitor attraction. There’s even a long established hardware store on the High Street which Eric always makes a point of visiting. (OK maybe that’s just a bit sad!) Whilst I would be the first to acknowledge that we can never compare Padiham with Poole, after all, the Property/Land Values on Poole Sandbanks are some of the highest in the world, as highlighted in the 3 part programme hosted by Piers Morgan a couple of years ago, and their visitor numbers are mega given the volume of British holidaymakers and the many European visitors passing through this vital port. It’s most definitely a BUSY place, and an extremely WEALTHY place. As a visitor to Poole I still feel however there is an important similarity with Padiham…excluding the obvious fact that both towns begin with the letter P, and that is the PEOPLE. People who are passionate about their surroundings. People who are proud to be doing their bit to retain the heritage and history. People who like to shop locally, people who like to get involved with their community. Individuals who are committed to doing what is right for their town and are not prepared to be herded along like sheep Padiham and surrounding areas might not have the millionaires and mansions, but it’s people are the most amazing on the planet! It’s so good to be back! Carol Broadbelt Ps - Local estate agents were left puzzled after being inundated with enquiries from Poole residents wishing to re-locate to Padiham and surrounding areas. It seems some people will do anything to get their hands on a free copy of the HERALD!

1. Do they know it’s Christmas. He who laughs last usually thinks slowest.

An Arab student sends an e-mail to his dad, saying: Dear Dad Berlin is wonderful, people are nice and I really like it here, but Dad, I am a bit ashamed to arrive at my college with my pure-gold Ferrari 599GTB when all my teachers and many fellow students travel by train. Your son, Nasser

The next day, Nasser gets a reply to his e-mail from his dad:

My dear loving son Twenty million US Dollar has just been transferred to your account. Please stop embarrassing us. Go and get yourself a train too. Love, your Dad

ASK A STUPID QUESTION. An American tourist asks the blonde lady, "Why do Scuba divers always fall backwards off their boats?" To which the blonde replies: " If they fell forwards, they'd still be in the boat. Derrrrrrrrr."
