Show Season Off and Running OBRA News June 2010 By Craig Widdifield.

Since our last Ontario Barrel Racing Association newsletter we are thrilled to report members gathered for our first joint show with NBHA Canada at the Via Trail- ers Barrel Blast and Open House the weekend of May 29 and 30 and we are happy to report it went off without a hitch, if you’ll pardon the pun.

This was the first OBRA under the association’s new all 4-D format and it seemed to go over very well with competitors and spectators alike. It was also the debut of OBRA’s first ever Rookie Barrels class and the numbers were pretty much as we anticipated for that class. We’re sure it will grow throughout the year as more and more rookie competitors see the benefit of this new class for novices to the sport as a way of introduc- ing them to the provincial level of competition. Satur- day’s Rookie Barrels featured 12 competitors, while on Sunday there were six in the class. 4-D numbers hovered around the 80 to 100 mark for the four runs over the weekend.

The VIP Breakfast Area and parking also seemed to be well received. We even had two more members upgrade to VIP member status at the show and added close to 40 new memberships to the association. Please note your input into our new programs is always welcomed and appreciated and received with the courtesy it deserves.

At this writing we are gearing up for the OBRA Barrel Blast Off at Fletcher’s Horse World in Waterford June 4-6. OBRA has secured some generous sponsors for the event including Iconoclast Boots and Davis Feeds and Farm Supply in Caledon. Iconoclast is donat- ing their fantastic protective boots for prizes and Davis Feeds is not only supplying the shavings for our com- petitors at a reasonable cost. They are also sponsoring one of the five Championship belt buckles we will be awarding to each of the winners of divisions in the Ontario Speed Horse Challenge open 4-D Barrel race on Saturday afternoon at the Blast Off. Our thanks to them. Donations were already rolling in for the silent auc- tion tables at press time too.

Be sure to watch for next month’s newsletter for a full report and results from the Blast Off or check out our website, www.obra.ca for full details and informa- tion on any of our programs for which you may have questions.

Speaking of which, congratulations to Doug McCal- lum and A Rey of Luck and Jodi Pendry and From Flame to Fame for their repeat success in the 4-D runs at Via Trailers Barrel Blast. Doug won both Warm-Up Barrel Races and Jodi was the winner of both open runs. Between them they recorded the only three sub-16 sec- ond runs of the weekend, with Doug posting the fastest time of close to 400 runs over the two days, a 15.839 on Saturday to win the warm-up and earn $226. A huge thank you goes out to Judy and Paul and all their family and staff at Via Trailers for once again being outstanding hosts for this event. The weather couldn’t have been more perfect, nor could the hospitali- ty.

On a personal member news note, our thoughts remain with the Wilson family after the tragedy of recently losing their home to fire. They recently held a photo party for friends and family to help gather some new photographic memories of their life after much of theirs was lost in the fire. If you have any photos of Jim, Karen and James and their family you can share, please contact them or a member of the OBRA executive and we’ll make sure they find their way to them. Jim Wilson Chevrolet, Buick, GMC is the premiere sponsor of OBRA. They are barrel sponsors and the emblazoned barrels look great with the dealership’s logos on them!
