DRIVER PROFILES #17 DJ Kennington
HOMETOWN: St. Thomas, Ontario // BIRTH DATE: July 15, 1977 // SPONSOR(S) / MAKE: Castrol Edge / Mahindra Tractors / Hitachi Power Tools / Brian Cathcart Trucking Dodge Avenger
NOTABLE: A perennial front-runner, DJ was runner-up in the 2009 final points (to Andrew Ranger) with a record of 2 wins (Delaware & Kawartha), two poles (St-Eustache & Riverside), nine top-fives, and 10 top-10 finishes. Has a new McColl- built oval track car for 2010 and will prepare rides for part- time racers Pierre Bourque and series newcomer Caitlin Johnston. Has previously raced in the NASCAR Nationwide Series and hopes to return to this division later this year.
QUOTABLE: “We’ve had several great years in a row, but we’ve never been able to close the deal. We’ll be going hard for the championship this year. But everybody’s going hard at it, and they’re all strong, you can’t count anybody out. I be- lieve you make your own luck...”
BY JOE HAMILTON (CAR) AND NASCAR (INSET) #21 Jason White
HOMETOWN: Sun Peaks, British Columbia // BIRTH DATE: May 3, 1973 // SPONSOR(S) / MAKE: A&W / Zimmer Wheaton GMC / Castrol / Praxair / Powder Ventures / Diamond Lil’s Chevrolet Impala SS
NOTABLE: Was the 2006 CASCAR West and 2008 NCATS Rookie Of The Year. Lives in British Columbia but the Burns Motorsports Team (which prepares his car) is based in Lon- don, Ontario. Ran all 13 races in 2009, finishing in 11th overall. Scored three top-10 finishes, with a season best of seventh at season opener at St-Eustache. Crew Chief Billy Morrison is returning to the team this year.
QUOTABLE: “We had the sophomore jinx last year, with a lot of little issues with the car. But we were happy with our progress. We’re getting more comfortable, and we’re a lot more prepared; we’re definitely a top-10 points team. Per- sonally, I have to focus on consistency, on hitting my marks, and not letting the little things get to me.”
#22 Scott Steckly
HOMETOWN: Milverton, Ontario // BIRTH DATE: March 2, 1972 // SPONSOR(S) / MAKE: Canadian Tire / Mo- tomaster / Mobil 1 / ERB Group / AW Millwrights Dodge Avenger
NOTABLE: One of the series’ true ‘nice guys,’ Steckly was the 2008 Canadian Tire Series champion. Rode one pole posi- tion (St-Eustache), a pair of wins (St-Eustache & Saskatoon) and nine top-fives to a fourth-place overall result in 2009. The high point of his season was his ‘worst to first’ run in the series’ inaugural appearance at Saskatoon’s Auto Clearing Motor Speedway. The low point was his late-race rollover in Montreal. Will have new road course car for 2010.
QUOTABLE: “We definitely want the championship back. There are so many good teams, whoever wins the title will have to finish top-five in every race. Our biggest problem last year was our 4 DNFs. That’s something we will have to elimi- nate if we hope to do well.”
