DRIVER PROFILES #11 John Gaunt
HOMETOWN: Barrie, Ontario // BIRTH DATE: August 1, 1959 SPONSOR(S) / MAKE: Triad Racing Technologies Dodge Avenger
NOTABLE: Enters the 2010 season as part of the newly-formed Gaunt Brothers Racing team, which he co-owns with his brother, Marty Gaunt. John will drive the No. 11 Dodge on the ovals, while NASCAR K&N Pro Series West champion Jason Bowles will pilot the car for at least some of the road course events. In the first two races of 2010, the team finished fourth and third, respectively, at Delaware and Mosport.
QUOTABLE: “We definitely have a chance to win a race with the equipment we have... I think it was 1993 with the Pizza Pizza car in CASCAR the last time I raced with my brother, Marty. From there, he went down south with Peter Gib- bons... A lot has happened in the time since.”
#14 James Van Domselaar
HOMETOWN: Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta // BIRTH DATE: June 14, 1969 SPONSOR(S) / MAKE: Steel-Craft Door Products Chevrolet Monte Carlo / Impala SS
NOTABLE: A veteran of the CASCAR West Series, Van Domse- laar competed in just one Canadian Tire Series race in ‘09, at his ‘hometrack’ of Edmonton. A crash on lap 11 put an early end to his season. He will enter three events this year, running a Monte Carlo on the oval at Saskatoon, and an Impala at the road courses in Edmonton and Toronto. James races primarily to increase awareness for Leukemia and Lymphoma research.
QUOTABLE: “We have more experience on the ovals, but Edmonton is my home race. My new sponsor wanted to do a major race in the East, so we decided to try our hand at the street course in Toronto. I’m looking forward to hang- ing out with my dad, and having some fun this year racing for charity.”
#15 Steven Mathews
HOMETOWN: New Liskeard, Ontario // BIRTH DATE: August 27, 1990 SPONSOR(S) / MAKE: Bill Mathews Motors / McColl Ford Fusion
NOTABLE: Steven grew up racing go-karts before moving to the USAC and Ford Focus Midgets series. Made six starts in the Ontario Sportsman Series in 2009, winning four times. Competed twice in the Canadian Tire Series in 2009, with results of a sixth at the Mosport oval and 22nd at the season- ending event at Kawartha Speedway.
QUOTABLE: “These cars are a big change from the Midgets, that’s why I did the Sportsman Series, to get a feel for the cars. The main adjustment I’ve had to make is adapting to a new crew and Crew Chief. I’ve run most of the Ontario tracks, so they won’t be totally unknown to me. We’ll run as many races as we can, and hope to crack the top-five every time out.”
