n an area known for its cement manufacturing lies a pristine environment along Rt. 191 that has been redeveloped and reforested to return it to its natural state. tal groups have gained access to learn, study and create outdoor environmental learning labs.
With the installation of the first “Learning Station” on the Rt 191 access to this land, anyone can stop and review the seasonal information display provided by public schools and organizations. Under the direction of Keith Williams, environmental manager for Hercules/Buzzi, an effort has been made to allow this land to become useful to the community. For instance, the Nazareth Area Middle School Environmental Club has undertaken a mulch experiment by designating four areas of different geographic and light locations to study. Eventually these areas will be tested by recycling some of the schools appropriate waste which, in time, will return to the school for use as mulch.
Williams says that over the next several years, the schools will be studying and documenting the trees, plants, stream life and birds, allowing children and environmental groups an opportunity to study nature in a relatively unspoiled setting.
