back, high performance insulation installed and then retiled with Welsh slate. A highly distinctive element of the pool building is the centrally glazed roof light structure (approximately 30m in length) above the 25 x 7 yard pool. Utilising a bird cage scaffold system within the building, the contractor carefully removed this single glazed structure, which was then replaced with an identical double glazed unit with an aluminium powder coated finish. Existing sash and centre hung pivot style timber windows were
repaired within the building and enhancements made to the entrance area, with the creation of a new vending area and open plan training room facility. Within the main pool area, the building was stripped back to a shell and core state and a new damp proof membrane applied to the underside of the roof, with high performance insulation material sandwiched between new tongue and groove boarding. The impressive timber roof trusses that span the pool hall were also redecorated during this process as were all walls and ceilings. Modernisation and upgrade of the building’s existing mechanical and electrical services was an essential element of the project and the contractor installed new ducting and lighting throughout the building. An efficient air handling unit was also installed to minimise heat loss and reduce condensation levels within the building. The historic pool

Restoring Original Features

regenerated Fore Street Swimming Pool is now attracting a record number of visitors through its doors as the latest generation of Ipswich residents benefit from this impressive nineteenth century facility. Councillor Judy Terry, Ipswich Borough Council’s Arts, Culture &
