HI-MACS®

Chosen for Innovative Garden at Chelsea Flower Show

as

Award winning designer Jo Thompson has selected HI-MACS®

a preferred material for key elements of ‘The Unexpected Gardener’ exhibit at the world’s most famous horticultural event. The horticultural therapy charity Thrive has been selected to create a small urban garden designed by award-winning designer Jo Thompson

using Thrive principles. The design concept shows how age or disability need not mean the end to gardening or a compromise to good design. This will be the first time that visitors to The Chelsea Flower Show will be able to see HI-MACS®

Devereux Architects Submits Proposals for Beach Hotel

Devereux Architects has submitted plans for a luxury beachfront hotel and

residential apartments. The £20m redevelopment for Roffey Homes will help to rejuvenate the seafront and attract new visitors to the town. It will be the first purpose-built hotel constructed in Worthing in more than a century. Devereux Architects’ designs for the development consist of three distinct elements: a central glass tower, a hotel to the west and apartments to the east. Influenced by its seafront location, the design has a nautical emphasis with a landmark feature of a wave-shaped roof and vertical glass bay, which will be particularly prominent at night when the building will be illuminated. The proposed hotel will provide versatile accommodation for both leisure and business users with 76 deluxe guest rooms and suites, state-of-the-art spa and leisure facilities, including a swimming pool, sauna and gym. In addition, Devereux Architects has designed a unique glazed ‘winter garden’ that will link some of the internal public function spaces with a series of guest rooms which can be reconfigured into serviced apartments for longer-term business use. The residential apartments will be located to the east of the hotel, compromising of 22 two bedroom and 26 three bedroom units as well as a four bedroom duplex penthouse. All apartments will be furnished to a high standard throughout and will each include a private balcony or terrace. Devereux Architects has given careful deliberation to the aesthetics of the building, with the hotel and residential elements displaying a separate aesthetic that identifies the separate functions, but using a cohesive palette of materials that unifies the building as a whole. The simple detailing of the west side has been designed to provide a foil to the elaborate period detailing of the adjacent hotel. To the east side the architecture takes on a more prominent look with a striking metal and glass design. Feedback from two public consultations, as well as advice offered by Worthing Borough Planning and Conservation Office, English Heritage and the West Sussex Design Group, have helped to shape Devereux Architects’ planning designs. Matthew Heath from Devereux Architects commented: “The proposals

have been designed to compliment this unique beach-front setting, deferring visually to the adjacent listed building with a well-mannered proposal that is proudly modern whilst being responsive and sympathetic to its surroundings. The high quality of materials employed will sit comfortably with the local vernacular, strengthening the sense of ‘place’ and providing a new focal point for the Worthing sea front and the wider Conservation Area.” Managing Director of Roffey Homes, Ben Cheal, said: “It is impossible to underestimate the importance of such a scheme in aiding the regeneration of the seafront. This is a significant investment in the area and an incredible opportunity for Worthing, signalling its intent to enhance the accommodation and facilities available to visitors and tourists, and ultimately broaden its appeal to a wider market.”

The RIBA’s Architecture Festival 2010 is Not to be Missed!

The Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) is excited to announce the launch of the North West Architecture Festival 2010 on Tuesday 1st June. RIBA have lined up some fantastic events, from a travelling exhibition called ‘Architruck’, guided walking tours around Liverpool’s Waterfront showcasing some of the best architecture in the region, to guest lectures from some of the country’s greatest structural designers. The festival is a celebration of the outstanding architecture to be found in the North West and will be highlighting the release of the RIBA’s ‘350 Awards’ shortlist, an award given to projects under £350,000; which will include a ‘People’s Choice Award.’ Belinda Irlam-Mowbray, Director of the RIBA North West said: “We are really excited about launching Architecture Festival 2010 in

Liverpool, this year’s 350 Award is a great way for the public to have their favourite building celebrated. We really want the public to come down to the Pier Head on June 1st and vote for their favourite building from this year’s 350 Award shortlist for the ‘People’s Choice Award’ and get people thinking about architecture.’ This year’s Architecture Festival will commence on Tuesday 1st June with

a very special public launch event at Liverpool Pier Head where people will get the chance to climb on board the Architruck; an interactive travelling exhibition that will be showcasing the shortlist of the ‘350 Awards’ as well as hosting some of the regions’ most talented structural designers. This is an open invitation for people to come along and have their say on what they think is good architecture, by voting for their favourite building from the 350 Award Shortlist. They will also get the chance to speak to some of the regions leading architects, find out what it is they do and discover exactly what architecture is. People attending the launch of

the Architecture Festival 2010 will also get the chance to meet a very special guest (to be confirmed), as they join RIBA and the local community in waving the Architruck goodbye as it embarks on its touring adventure of the North West.

Belinda continues: “The North West has some of the

most breathtaking buildings to be found in the country and it is really exciting that we can celebrate those that provoke the infamous civic pride of the North West, with the people who interact with them on a daily basis. Many people think architecture is something that involves huge developments and massive budgets, but what is at the heart of architecture is how a well designed space can enhance the overall experience of a building. Architecture is for everyone: it comforts us at home, it impacts the way we work but more importantly, it allows us to enhance the pleasure we take from our surroundings. Architecture Festival 2010 will commence on the 1st June and run through to the 26th June.
