Arsonist & Thief Is Sentenced For Crime Spree

Excerpts taken from The London Free Press, By Jane Sims

On April 18th of this past year, a fire destroyed the Bilyea’s Granton area barn and part of their business. Tragically, 35 of their horses were in the building at the time and 16 died as a result of the fire. Fire officials originally believed it was an electri- cal fire but not long after, someone reported seeing Robert Stilz, a previ- ous employee of the Bilyeas, acting suspiciously while walking down their road. Then in July, Stiltz walked into the local OPP detach- ment and confessed to starting the fire accidentally with a cigarette. He had parked away from the property and although he saw the fire, he didn’t try to release the horses or call for immediate emergency help. He instead went back to his pickup and, once the fire was out of control, called 911. Then, he told police, he drove to Denfield to tell the Bilyeas. After nearly a year, victim impact statements were heard recent- ly in court. Kathy Bilyea expressed with emotion how she felt about the loss of 16 horses including her trea- sured mare, Bailey. She was the horse she’d waited for all her life, she told Ontario Court Justice John Skowronski in London. “That day, she stated, changed everything for her and her family, especially because of the loss of her prized horse”. “I don’t enjoy horses as much after losing her,” she said, her voice breaking. She also showed Skowronski a photo of the charred remains of the barn and dead horses. She said she’s afraid to leave home and has nightmares about the horses trying to escape the burning barn. She has even created a memorial flower garden in the shape of a horseshoe and in which she placed

her charred bit and spurs.

Nelson Bilyea talked about the horses and stated the couple “had lost all our good ones,”. One stallion had previously been insured but the premium became too expensive. He figured they lost $75,000 for a decade of stud fees. Additionally, the Bilyeas had to board out their horses and take out a $50,000 bank loan after retiring their mortgage years earlier.

Robert Stiltz, 26, was sentenced to 18 months in jail for the arson and other crimes committed during an 18 month spree in the area. He will not be required to pay restitution due to his limited ability to do so. He was, though, ordered to stay away from the Bilyeas and public horse auctions and not to possess any incendiary devices, including match- es.
