Time to saddle up for the season

OBRA News March 2010

Well your butts should be gettin’ itchier than a hairless Chihuahua in a sweater factory to climb back into the saddle and turn some drums by now. Mother Nature always balances out the weather within the sea- son and we sure got walloped with snow in early March. We know you have been chomping at the bit too for our 2010 show list and we’re happy to release what we have planned so far to you here in The Rider. This is still preliminary, more shows will likely be added over the next two months.

That will be followed by an OBRA Blast Off at Fletcher's June 5 and 6. This show will be a fundraiser for our association. If you have any items you can donate to a silent auction we are having here, it would be appre- ciated and help to make our year even more successful than it's already shaping up to be. The rest of the show list can be found elsewhere on this page. We hope your reading the March OBRA newsletter while walking around or sitting in the stands taking in one of the exhi- bitions at the Can-Am All Breeds Horse Show. Drop by and pay us a visit at our booth in the trade show area if you are. We1d love to talk horses and speed events with you and we’ll be holding a raffle for some great prizes too. Bring along $45 and buy your membership for the season too. It entitles you to a free subscription to this publication in a addition to many other benefits.

Before we get to the nitty gritty of the business of barrel racing this month, it’s time to celebrate our 2009 Champions and top riders. Following is the list of award winners as present- ed at our banquet in January at the Mohawk Inn. For those who missed it, it was a great night.

VIP Memberships Going Fast

Our new VIP membership program is being well received by many members. So much so, that it looks as though we will be able to add money to the spe- cial VIP Run at this year’s finals and that we might have to restrict how many VIP member- ships we sell. We now have sev- eral paid for or committed to. We will likely have to restrict the benefits of VIP parking to the first 12 who sign up (and we’re getting there already). All the other perks will still be offered to anyone who buys a VIP membership after that. A $350 VIP membership gives you two single memberships for married couples, or replaces an individual or family member- ship. The concept behind the VIP Membership Program is to give the benefit of sponsorship to regular members who do not own a business or offer a ser- vice and would not get any value out of an OBRA sponsor- ship.

OBRA Youth Barrels 2009

Once again congratulations to all of our 2009 season cham- pions and top riders. Special thanks to our past president Louise Annett who did a great job co-ordinating and purchas- ing the awards. They were ter- rific.

VIP members will get VIP treatment at the shows with a VIP parking decal for preferred parking and complimentary con- tinental breakfasts at two-day shows.

have had new memberships pur- chased with the intent of com- peting in the rookie class in 2010 and have had many posi- tive comments on the addition of the event to our class list. The class is restricted to Ontario res- idents who have not competed at an OBRA or NBHA sanc- tioned event or rodeo in Ontario for the past two consecutive years and who have not earned more than $1,000 barrel racing lifetime. Rookies can only com- pete in this class for two years. Current year champions become ineligible the following season. Final approval of rookie status rests with the executive. There will be a saddle and buck- le for the year-end high point and reserve champions. Rookie class entries can also compete in other classes for which they qualify at shows.

Sponsor Packages Available

There are still a number of sponsorship opportunities avail- able for the 2010 OBRA season. Following is a list of some of them. Keep in mind, we are dedicated more than ever that you get the most out of your sponsorship dollars this season. Your business or service will be promoted by our association to members and beyond using every available tool at our asso- ciation’s disposal.

If you want to be part of next year1s awards list, be sure to get your OBRA membership and get out to some shows this season. OBRA has cut its mem- bership fee to just $45 dollars this season to attract new mem- bers and make showing more affordable for everyone. We have also added a youth mem- bership fee at just $35 for the very first time.

We have some fabulous year-end awards coming in 2010 including guaranteed saddles and buckles to all of our 4-D Division champions and reserve champions and awards to the top five. In fact, if we can secure just two more sponsors at $1,000 each, we will be handing out saddles and buckles and top five awards in all of our classes

Preferred, no hassle stalling at the finals, and a slot to com- pete in a special VIP only, 2-D, one-second split barrel race at the finals for a saddle (1D) and belt buckle (2D) with NO ENTRY FEE. Payback will be announced on this when all memberships have been sold. It also gives you wrist band access to free refreshments at the finals in a special OBRA Café that will open to all members at the 2010 finals.

Plus you get satisfaction of supporting Ontario’s longest running barrel racing associa- tion and helping to make it a success.
