COMMIT WITH AN IMPROVEMENT CONTRACT
MY THREE STEP STRATEGY TO REAL IMPROVEMENT
To experience real improvement you will have to commit yourself on some level to a
plan that will move you towards your ultimate goal of lower scores. So I want you to
write and sign a contract to yourself that you will commit to my three pillars of
improvement. These three strategies are the basic needs of improving long term.
1. Pre Shot Routine - Commit to doing your routine every shot whether it is in practice
or in play. Assessing the situation carefully and realistically is part of this routine so
you can select the best club and shot to hit. Your routine should help you set up
correctly and the same every shot. It should just as importantly set up your brain so
that your focus is just on the one shot at hand and breathing and visualization are
important aspects of this process. A good pre shot routine aids in you committing fully
to every shot you take.
2. Post Shot Routine - After every shot you take assess the result and what went right
or wrong. This assessment in fundamental in learning what you can do to improve.
The next level of appraisal is really a key factor and it involves tracking your stats.
You need to commit to keep track of the basics in terms of fairways and greens hit in
regulation but you need to take it to another level of specificity. Every shot needs to
be tracked in terms of distance (short/long) and direction (left right) and this includes
putts. Set up your own short forms and format that you want to use to do this but it
needs to be part of your post shot routine on every shot. There are many great tracking
tools on the web to enter your stats and track them long term. This will allow you to
then develop and commit to the next pillar.
3. Improvement Plan - To improve you must be able to develop a plan that is based
on sound information. Sometimes we need the stats to create an honest judgment of
what you need to improve. Once you see patterns to your game you need to commit
to a plan that will help you get to the next level. This may involve lessons, equipment
changes, practice, or strategy adjustments. But you need to create a plan and make
it part of your contract of commitment to lower scores.
