First Taste: Doyon Kicks Off Pro Life
At 25 and with the opportunity to live his
dream lying before him Mike Doyon jumped
“++++”
at the chance. The young Ottawa resident
did what many young amateur golfers
Outstanding
aspire to do this past January as he threw Golf Digest
caution to the wind, gathered up his savings
and his golf skills, and headed south to
Florida to experience life as a touring golf
professional. He kept an online journal for
people to follow at http://

Of course, he did not take the task on
lightly – there was plenty of time spent working with his coach (his cousin, AVAILABLE
CPGA Pro Dustin Doyon – who formerly worked at Carleton Golf &
Yacht Club) and just as much time formulating a schedule of events to $

play. “There is a lot to it that most people don’t even consider,” Doyon from 865 per person
recently told Flagstick. “You have to think about where you will play,
where you will live, and where you can practice along with a lot more
details. Of course, you have to hope to play well too so you can help pay GOLF & RIDE
for it all.”

Doyon did not cash a lot of significant checks in his first professional
Monday to Wednesday
foray that lasted about 2 months – his first one was for just $38 and his per person, dbl.
$
biggest was a mere $200, but the lessons he learned about himself were occ. plus taxes

invaluable. “I woke up happy everyday because I knew all I had to do
was golf or work on my game. It cost me a lot of money to do it but I
learned so much about what you need to do to be a professional golfer.”

He did manage two top ten finishes in the handful of events he played.
The highlight for Doyon was his final event of his winter campaign, the
613-543-2003 or 1-800-437-2233
venerable Coors Light Open played in Ft. Myers, Florida. Doyon qualified
for his place in the tournament via a 12-man playoff and although he did not
play as well as he wanted (he shot 149 for the tournament to tie for 25
th
) he
got to do so alongside veteran players. “There were a lot of guys there with
Nationwide Tour experience and even some PGA Tour experience and
knowing I had earned my spot to be there alongside them was satisfying.”
Doyon plans to continue his career as a professional golfer, with the
target of playing on the Ontario based-Great Lakes Tour this summer
between time spent at his new job as a Technical Rep for Nike Golf
Canada for the Ottawa Region.
Reserve up to 14 days in advance
If things go according to plan Doyon says he will look to try his hand at
Canadian Tour Qualifying this coming Fall. UPPERCANADAGOLF.COM
