Glengarry Golf & Country Club:
Not To Be Missed
In a competitive marketplace, in a time when many of their rivals are choosing
to lay low, the Glengarry Golf & Country Club just keeps pushing ahead.
The Alexandria, Ontario golf course has always had location on its side, it sits
conveniently half way between Ottawa and Montreal as well as highways 417
and 401, but accessibility is only part of their equation of success.
For twenty-eight years, from their founding in 1961 until 1989, they were a
simple, small town golf course. Since expanding to an eighteen hole layout in
1989 and getting a renovation by world-class architect Graham Cooke in 1991,
they have blossomed in to so much more. And that trend continues in earnest
in 2009 as a whole slew of changes should keep their progressive reputation
intact. They offer plenty of compelling reasons to seek them out as the next
place for you to join, run your golf tournament, or visit for a regular game.
The golf course has wintered well and members and public players alike can
expect the usual high quality conditions that the club is known for. The conditioning
has received a bit of a boost due to recent work to improve drainage and
irrigation on several holes. It will allow for more consistent turf through a variety
of weather conditions.
Most dramatic of the 2009 innovations will be the lengthening of the golf course.
By stretching out eight holes it will now grow to between 6500 and 6600 yards
– a major jump from the 6233 that it has been at. “We have been listening to our
members and customers and felt the lengthening was an important project for us
to undertake,” says Club President Ray Banister. Depending on the growing
conditions most of the tees should be in play by mid-summer.
