Discovery Determines Co-Champions For
2008 Golf Channel Amateur Tour
Through the graciousness of a golfer looking to uphold the traditions of golf, it was
eventually determined that the Ottawa edition of the Golf Channel Amateur Tour
actually had co-champions for 2008.
In the end it was Mike Carlon and Nelson King who were declared co-champions
for the overall Golf Channel Amateur Tour championship and also for the Senior
division in 2008. Lenny Gareau was the winner in the tour’s open division.
The interesting story took place after Mike Carlon (in photo - right) had actually
been declared overall and senior champion at the year end awards presentation and
had his picture taken with the two awards.
Tour Director Farzin Hanifi tells Flagstick Golf Magazine what then transpired.
“Mike had been looking at the Stableford point totals awarded at each of the events
and noticed a scoring error which had eluded everyone. Keeping with the best
traditions of golf, Mike brought this to my attention. Since we were at the end of the
season and there wasn’t any time for a playoff, Mike and Nelson agreed to share the
championship titles.”
When contacted by Flagstick Golf Magazine, Mr. Carlon didn’t want to make a
big deal about the situation, while Mr. King indicated that, “The incident was typical
for Mike. It’s a part of golf and Mike wouldn’t accept what wasn’t his.”
Both players indicated that they enjoyed the Golf Channel Amateur Tour and were
looking forward to the 2009 season. The tour is building in numbers and information
