10) You've worked at local Spanish-language outlets, general and national market television and now at a national sports network. How do they differ and how are the similar?
The focus of stories is different, certainly the audience is differ- ent, but the biggest difference (I have experience) is resources. Resources enable/disable your ability to be productive and proper- ly serve your audience (let alone be competitive).
11) How has the` TV news business changed from when you first began your career?
Undoubtedly the biggest change is technology and social media. When I began my career "appointment television" was still strong. Now, it's all about the almost instant distribution of content on multiple platforms. It's a very daunting and exciting time to be a journalist!
12) Where do you see the TV news industry in 10 years?
I think control will continue to grow for viewers. TV News leaders continue to think they know what viewers want (sometimes arrogantly) and force feed it. This, while social media continues to teach us that people decide when and what they want (content). For example, I choose what media to follow on Twitter based on what's most important and of interest to me (I am sure that while there are some similarities...which media other people follow is specific to what they want). When I watch TV news now - it's largely out of curiosity and
nostalgia...they seldom have any story that I already haven't seen, read or heard from my iPhone.
13) Can you see yourself doing something other than journalism? I absolutely see myself potentially doing something other than
journalism....perhaps academia or consulting. I enjoy working with journalists in different points of their career (entry, mid career and veterans). It is very rewarding for me to help people grow in their careers. If I have had any success in my career, it has been because of the generosity of so many talented people....who put me on their shoulders and helped me see farther and reach higher than I ever could alone. To be able to do exactly that for others -- is the best way I find to thank my mentors.
