This SPOTLIGHT belongs to journalist Hugo Balta, coordinating producer at ESPN where he is responsible for the content and on-air look of studio and event related pro- grams as well as driving creativity, accuracy, storytelling and entertain- ment of sports news shows.
He was previously the managing editor for CBS 2 News serving the NYC metropolitan area where he led the assignments and reporting teams in
producing content for daily newscasts. Balta has also worked at other impressive broadcast outlets such as MSNBC where he was a senior producer and Telemundo 47 as VP of news and news director. 1) Hugo, please tell me about yourself and what you
do at ESPN. I am an experienced Broadcasting and Digital Media
Professional who has directed growth, change and innovation in sev- eral markets, divisions and business cycles. I am the Coordinating Producer at ESPN, responsible for the content and on-air look of studio and event related programs; driv- ing creativity, accuracy, storytelling and entertainment of sports news shows like Sportscenter and the Highlight Express.
2) What made you want to become a television jour- nalist and what was your first job in the business?
My parents. I saw how they gravitated to media (Spanish lan- guage) in order to help them navigate through their adoptive coun- try. Like so many children of immigrants - I was their translator, helping them as well. I quickly learned the power of communication and set a course to learn how to effectively use it to empower my community.
My first job was as an intern at the local Telemundo news department in NYC. An internship turned into a part time job, later a full time job and a few years later I was named News Director.
