Continued from previous page l Higher repair costs.

More difficult hardware and software upgrade processes.

In addition, if a computer hard drive is

installed in these EPC test systems, they are more susceptible to shock-induced failure, especially in a rugged production environment. But without some form of mass storage, both EPC and PC-based sys- tems can suffer.

Cable and harness testing with a flexible PC-

based system such as CableEye can actually increase productivity. At the workstation level, it can be set up to be only as complex as required for design and diagnostics, or as simple as required for automated pass/fail testing. No matter how it is configured, however, the test system presents a common look and feel at each workstation level, allowing staff to become productive quickly as they switch between product lines, products, or between job functions.

Many different companies can benefit from a

PC-based test system such as CableEye. These include firms producing cables and harnesses, or companies integrating cables and harnesses in their products, or companies testing and repairing capital equipment that includes cables and har- nesses. A wide range of employees at these compa- nies can benefit from such a test system, in areas of design, assembly, prototyping, piloting, produc- tion, QC, and shipping from engineers to techni- cians and managers to production line workers.

the test system can be adapted to those changes. Different or new test systems are not needed with changes, minimizing the need for cross-training of personnel. Even when changing from testing a low-voltage line to a high-voltage line, the CableEye test system hardware and software pro- vide a common system platform for ease of use by different operators — or the same operator working at different jobs. CableEye facilitates increased pro- ductivity of high-quality, ready-to-ship

products by encouraging error detection and reso- lution as far upstream as possible in a manufactur- ing process. Error detection and correction is far more complex and time-consuming when testing is performed only on a fully integrated system or completed product. By finding errors earlier in the production process, this complex late-stage testing can be minimized. As a consequence, downtime of valuable capital equipment can be minimized by early accurate identification and diagnosis of failed cables.

Flexible Tester CableEye cable and harness test systems are

not limited to testing any particular types of cables or connectors. They can test cables with or without connectors, long and short cables, and even prod- ucts with no cables, such as in backplanes or print- ed-circuit boards (PCBs). CableEye systems are

shipped with software that includes over 500 con- nector graphics, and enough dynamic templates that users can automatically generate graphic images of many standard connector shapes by pin count for use in custom cable designs and printed reports. Optional software for the test system, the Connector Designer™ software, allows operators to design and test an unlimited number of differ- ent connector shapes, even importing photographs

of a connector for design and testing. The test sys- tem is also supported by a growing library of approximately 60 connector boards, many with dif- ferent types of connectors, such as the model CB19 board for audio applications. Boards can be mixed and matched to test a cable, and the CableEye sys- tem will automatically select and display the cor- rect connector graphic image. Custom or nonconventional connectors and connector combinations can be tested by mounting
