Don Wirth I have been an HO Frisco mod- A minimum of


$100 and a Dremel Rotary Tool Kit with a variable-speed Dremel 3000 rotary tool and accessories are awarded to the monthly winner of the RMC/Dremel Kitbashing Award. Models must


consist of at least 50 percent commercial components. Entries must include


at least two high- resoluti on photos (minimum 3,000 pixels wide) and a short descripti ve text of the model and its constructi on. All entries must

eler since the mid-1960s. Over the years, I have built up a decent roster of the railroad’s steam power in brass. Since I model 1943, I have only one diesel pol- luting the air over Newburg. Back when the PFM Frisco


1520 class models were im- ported, I ended up with three. I detailed and modified them to represent the three versions: 1500–1514, 1515–1519, and 1520–1529. My modeling took a hiatus


when I got involved with the real 1522 from day one until the last day of her restoration and opera- tion. I spent many hours up close and personal with the engine. After No. 1522 was retired, I


got back into building my roster. I stumbled onto a horrible PFM 4-8-2 on eBay and rescued it. Since the PFM model had been butchered and painted with


a three-inch brush, I decided to pull out all the stops and detail this model as thoroughly as I could as she appeared in service, fresh out of the West Shops at Springfield, Missouri. I totally stripped the engine,


removing the cab. I replaced the domes with correct ones. All pip- ing was done per the prototype 1522, and I detailed the cab back-


head and interior as best could be done with the available cast- ings and some scratchbuilt items. The running gear was gone


through completely, and I added a Scullin Disc main driver. It was a Bowser driver with a scratch- built counterweight and the gear was replaced. A PSC idler gear- box was installed along with a can motor mounted on a torque
