THE TUNNEL MOTORSD40T-2 Locomotives
Built between April 1974 and July 1980 by General Motors Electro-Motive Division, a total of 312 SD40T-2 “tunnel motor” locomotives were produced. Based on the SD40-2,
the SD40T-2 is equipped with “cooling system modifications” designed for better engine cooling in tunnels. Lowering the radiator intakes along the walkway allowed more fresh, cooler air to enter rather than hot exhaust from the tunnel ceiling. This helped to keep the locomotive from overheating in the numerous tunnels along the mountain railways of the western US.
The SD40T-2 was originally purchased by three railroads, Denver & Rio Grande Western (73 units), Southern Pacific (229 units), and Cotton Belt (10 units). After mergers in the 1990s, Union Pacific owned all 312 units and by 2008, none were operating in DRGW or SP paint on the Union Pacific. While many still operate, those that do have been sold to leasing companies or have been exported to other countries. Both HO & N Scale models are factory equipped with an ESU® sound decoder or ESU® non-sound decoder. DC available for N scale and DC plug option available for HO locomotives by request.
