Fitness frenzy will see device usage hit 70m in three years


J


uniper Research says use of fitness wearables will treble to around 70 million by 2018 – up from the estimated 19 million in-use devices now. It expects fitness to remain the dominant wearables segment until that time but says smart watches will start to become more popular towards the end of the three year period.


Te report says that two classes of fitness device will emerge – basic trackers and more complex devices that offer additional features, such as notifications and music control. It also anticipates that sales of healthcare-focused wearable devices will increase. Devices will include wearable ECGs (electrocardiograms), glucose monitors and insulin pumps, but only once questions around regulation are answered.


Cloud driven by cost efficiency

Gartner survey conducted in ten countries found that 40% of companies were citing cost reduction as the main reason they


invest in software-as-a-service and other cloud services. But security continues to be a worry for many with 46% of CIOs saying they will adopt private clouds instead of using externally hosted services. (Information-Age.com)


PCs lead growth of smart connected devices

ales of smart connected devices – PCs, tablets, and smartphones combined – hit 60.1 million units in Q3 of 2014 across Western Europe, says IDC. Tat was


8.6% higher compared with the same quarter a year before. PCs saw the strongest rise with good consumer demand during the back-to-school season – they were up 23.6%. While tablets declined, hybrid device sales saw 46.4% growth. Smartphones sales grew by 6.1% year-on-year, boosted by more affordable devices, smartphones and 4G.

Intel wants to simplify IoT access

ntel has launched a platform designed to ‘unify and simplify’ connectivity and security for the Internet of Tings (IoT) and make it easier for companies to test,


deploy and secure smart devices. Plans include a cloud configuration and data exchange platform called Wind River Edge that will enable the Intel IoT Gateway to be used for rapid deployment of systems. McAfee will provide security solutions for the connections.

icrosoft is updating its Intune cloud-based mobile device management (MDM) solution, adding mobile application management (MAM) features to provide more control over mobile data. Te system will use


a containerised approach to enable corporate data and apps to be separated from consumer apps and data.
