Synology offers big possibilities on a small budget
T
he new Synology DiskStation DS215j is a two-bay NAS server designed for home and personal users who want to manage data, stream media content and synchronise files in their own cloud.
Equipped with a dual-core CPU, the unit delivers average read speed over 111 MB/sec and writes at over 87 MB/sec, an almost 20% gain on its predecessor. Its SuperSpeed USB 3.0 interface boosts its file-transfer speeds to around 5Gbps, while efficient power management keeps consumption as low as 13.4 watts in full operation and 5.3 watts when in hibernate mode.
If you make use of the Synology Surveillance Station, the DS215j can turn into a full-featured network video recorder. It supports up to ten cameras and will stream ten channels of simultaneous high-definition footage at 240 FPS in 720p. Two free IP camera licences are provided to add encouragement for anyone thinking of using the NAS server as a surveillance hub.
It also comes with DiskStation Manager (DSM) 5.1, which enables remote access and synching with popular file-sharing and storage services, including Microsoft OneDrive.
