SERVICE AND STABILITY It’s Tech Data’s people that make the difference – and in the UK a number of employees have been with the business for well over half of the company’s lifetime.

‘All that makes it a good place to work and a good business to work with as well. It helps us deal with challenges when they arise and draw additional strength when we need it when we face difficult challenges – and means we are really good at making the most of good opportunities.’

Tis is perhaps, why Tech Data has a reputation for being able to accelerate and develop business in new areas of the market. Te establishment of its Collection of Specialists businesses and the experience on integrating acquired businesses into its own over the years, has taught the company how to adapt to changing circumstances and embrace new ideas and best practices.

‘We do have a lot of experience of adapting to change. We have diversified into new areas and at times we have had to innovate constantly to make sure we got the best results. We’ve learned a lot from those experiences and I think that has helped us to develop, as individuals and collectively – I also think that it will help us a great deal in the future’, says Watts.

Transformation

‘Te whole IT industry is undergoing a massive transformation in which the roles that everyone plays – from the IT manager through to resellers and distributors too – is changing. Tat’s certainly going to present some very considerable challenges and opportunities going forward and Tech Data will – as it always has over the last four decades – adapt to suit the conditions and ensure it meets the needs of customers and partners.’

Whilst it’s probably asking too much for anyone to look at what the next four decades might hold and where the Tech Data business might be in 40 years time, Watts is optimistic about the future. ‘I have every confidence in Tech Data’s ability to adapt. Te changes we are now seeing in IT are perhaps the most fundamental we’ve seen since the explosion in PC sales we saw in the 1980s. We see that only as an opportunity – to keep transforming and reinventing our business to meet the needs of our supplier partners and our customers.

‘We have a focus on the customer and on partnerships and a shared, common goal. We are thinking big for the future and we’d encourage everyone to think in the same way. Forty years ago, no-one would have dreamed the industry could grow to become the global success story it is today. As the cloud and mobile technologies start to open up more and more possibilities, we see no reason why it can’t be even more successful over the next 40 years. Te possibilities are endless.’

Amidst all the technological and behavioural change what won’t alter is Tech Data’s focus on partnerships and the customer and the values make it such a steadying influence in the channel today. Watts says ‘Our culture and our people are what’s made the business in the past and will also make the Tech Data of tomorrow, whatever the future may bring.’

Changing names

Dawn Ballinger, Customer Service Manager, Basingstoke

This April, Dawn Ballinger will have been with the company for an amazing 30 years. She says: ‘I joined the company when it was three months old and called First Software. I worked in the support team consisting of three people that carried out the purchasing, credit control, customer service, goods receiving and shipping. The company grew and changed its name to Frontline and then Computer 2000 and finally Tech Data. I have seen some amazing changes in both the industry and the company over the years. I’m proud to be part of the Tech Data family.’

Keeping it in the family

Rachael Miller and Amy Leeming, York Rachael Miller is a 27-year company veteran who is currently an Intercompany and Accounts Receivable Manager. Her niece Amy has been with the company for nine years, currently working as a Planner on the Central Supply Chain Procurement team at Tech Data’s York office in the United Kingdom (UK).

‘Aunt’ Rachael still remembers the day – 1 May 1988 – when she received the call telling her that Amy had been born. Nearly 17 years later, Amy began her career at Tech Data as a Finance Assistant. Rachael says: ‘I am really pleased that Amy is working for Tech Data today and has been here for nine years herself. I am able to share my experiences with her and know that she is working for a successful and thriving organisation.’

And their family continues to grow within the company – Amy and her fiancé, James Reid, who is an IT Project Manager at Tech Data, will be married in February.
