TAILORING
Where better to get a tailor-made suit than in Asia, which is renowned for its high quality garments and relatively inexpensive prices? Business Traveller Asia-Pacific asked the most reputable tailors in Hong Kong, Bangkok and Singapore for the most important sartorial considerations when it comes to ordering your next two-piece.
HONG KONG SAM’S TAILOR
Sam’s Tailor has a long and distinguished history of tailoring. For more than 50 years, the family- run business has measured up everyone from Michael Jackson and David Bowie to several US presidents and members of the British royal family. The small shop in Tsim Sha Tsui is covered with framed photographs of their famous clients. It certainly helps to explain why Sam’s is one of Hong Kong’s most famous institutions and almost a tourist attraction in its own right. Time needed to complete a suit: Roshan Melwani (the grandson of the original “Sam”) advises that the quickest time for getting a completely bespoke suit is two full working days. With an early morning meeting from Monday to Friday, the new clothing can be ready by late afternoon the following day.

Which fabrics to choose: For all- season fabrics, Melwani suggests wool and cashmere blends or wool and silk blends, which are also easy to pack. Avoid cotton and linen suits when travelling as they are more prone to crease. Popular styles: Melwani reveals that Sam’s Tailor has started to see more demand for one-button, three-button and three-roll-two button suits, as guys seem to be moving away from the more traditional two-button jackets. Trends for 2015: Sam’s predict one- button jackets with no vents at the back as a popular choice for 2015. Want your suit to stand out? Consider incorporating creative details like pick-stitched lapels or coloured buttonholes on the lapel and cuffs. Options for black-tie functions: A black tuxedo for men and black silk dress for women never goes out of style. Price: Prices start from HK$2,400 (US$310), while the average cost is HK$4,400 (US$567). Opening hours: Monday to Saturday 9.40am to 7pm; Sunday 10am to 12 noon.
