is especially true. The largely peaceful Occupy protests that lasted two and a half months in Hong Kong changed my home city forever. Politics aside, I was intrigued by just how good we’ve had it over the years – but never realised. Even under such extraordinary circumstances, the city functioned normally for the most part. Yes, on average I spent 45 minutes more to get to work, but I also appreciated that in many big cities getting stuck in traffic for 45 minutes is nothing. The MTR ran normally, so there was always the option not to use the roads. If anything, what happened has made me love Hong Kong more, whatever faults it may still have. Getting stuck on the road is one thing; getting stuck at the airport is another. Which is why everyone loves an efficient airport, and that’s why airports around the world are upping their game to attract business. In this issue, we look at key European airports – many of them courting traffic from Asia – and how they’re taking things to the next level. See “European hubs” on page 26. This is also the time of the year when some of us make resolutions to get fit and get back to the gym with renewed vigour. I know that many of you use travel as an excuse not to exercise, but do yourself a favour and get started. In “Back in the saddle” (page 36), I’ve talked to a few friends in the fitness industry about exercises that are suitable for a

hotel gym. And guess what? Many hotels can lend you gym gear. So now you have no excuse not to hit the gym. If you’ve already established a healthy exercise routine, maybe the next thing to do to welcome the New Year is to get a new suit made. Hong Kong, Bangkok and Singapore are excellent places to visit a tailor. Pricing is great and the quality is high. And if you travel within Asia frequently, you could even get your fittings done during one trip and pick your suit up on the next. We’ve turned to three of the region’s best-known tailors for advice on how to dress your best. See “Sartorial journey” on page 64. Finally, please join me in welcoming 2015 with this issue’s Champagne guide, “Alternative Fizz”, on page 70. Let’s make this coming year not just another one, but a better one!

e say “it’s another year” time and time again. But we never really mean it, do we? There’s no such thing as just another year. And for me, at the beginning of 2015, this
