CHARITY AUCTION
Charity Auction 2014 I
am glad to announce that Business Traveller Asia-Pacific will be teaming up with Chi Heng
Foundation for the ninth year to roll out the annual Charity Auction, to raise funds needed to support its work in helping children and youngsters in rural China affected by HIV and AIDS. These young victims are the offspring of impoverished villagers who participated in illegal blood selling out of desperation to make ends meet. Virus-infected needles were reused, and these parents contracted HIV as a result. After they fell sick, they found themselves unable to care for their families. Some have died, leaving behind orphans. During the 2013-14 school year, Chi Heng sponsored more than 8,800 of these young victims, providing them with financial assistance and the opportunity to continue their education. The charity has built six new reading rooms in Anhui, Henan and Yunnan Provinces. In the coming year, the

organisation hopes to reach out to at least 9,000 of these youths, through further expansion into central and southwestern China. Chi Heng’s care for these children is also about healing their broken hearts through psychosocial programmes. One of the examples is called “The Hero Book”, a concept adapted from South Africa. Launched in summer, 2014, it involves encouraging affected school students to tell their stories through drawing and narration, and in the process rebuild their confidence and self-esteem. In addition, the organisation has also introduced a distance-learning initiative, enabling volunteers in cities to connect with these young villagers over the internet and help enrich their knowledge through online talks and interaction. This also happens to be the tenth year of Chi
Heng’s summer camp programme in which HIV/ AIDS-impacted children with good academic
records are selected to go on field trips in big metropolises such as Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou, with the goal to broaden their horizons and strengthen their aspirations for university studies and future careers. Another aspect of Chi Heng’s work is to facilitate self-help through community projects. The eco-bag factory is a successful example. Beautiful bags are manufactured by women impacted by HIV in rural China and every piece sold contributes to an income for these villagers who can then support the education of their young ones.
