FIT FOR PURPOSE

aving over-indulged consistently since taking this job, I finally reached the point of no return about a month ago. Much to the surprise of my family and colleagues, I decided to complete a seven-day juice detox. Between delivering the GBTA Fundamentals course and the next ITM Forum, I had a week where I wasn’t going to be hosted at any industry event – and it brought home to me how challenging it can be trying to maintain a healthy eating regime while travelling on business.


During my next business trip I was surprised to see that the fruit option in the hotel breakfast buffet was covered in syrup and the drink options were tea or coffee... but no decaf. In the meeting room there was a sumptuous array of croissants and pastries, but no fruit. The drinks station didn’t even have a wedge of lemon on it, for those who don't fancy their tea with milk. Lunch was buffet-style and the salad bar had lettuce, tomato and cucumber, but there wasn’t a pepper or a mushroom in sight, and the hot buffet offered a variety of creamy or fried dishes. The hotel was actually lovely, and had I not been on a health kick I’m sure I wouldn’t have even noticed the lack of healthy options – but it got me thinking about the well-being of our travelling community.


As I write this, I’m on my way to San Diego for the International Air Transport Association (IATA) conference. I have searched online for juicebars and found there are at least eight within walking distance of my hotel – yet again, our US friends are ahead of the curve. When I logged into ‘manage my flight’ a few days ago I was pleased to see that the airline I’m flying with has a healthy-options menu, and I can reserve the dish I want. Restaurants and food stores are improving their approach to healthy eating, providing more information and choice for consumers. It would be great to see more of the business travel suppliers follow their lead in support of a healthier global workforce.
