LIVESTOCK EVENT 2014

The Livestock Event’s Holstein classes saw its second year residency in the main hall at the NEC, Birmingham. Held a couple of months earlier than it’s usual September date, the ring was located in a perfect spot to showcase the dairy breeds; being surrounded by busy AI stands. Izzy Whittaker picks up the story

I

n a show with all to play for it was two cows carrying a Rosina family name that swept the board with a one, two in the championship. Despite being unrelated these two quality cows shared similar attributes being tremendously balanced with great udders. Nick and Louisa Sercombe from the Shambles herd in Leicestershire brought home the championship trophy with their relatively unknown third calver Neatishall Decker Rosina. Purchased in the Neatishall dispersal sale in May 2012, this was her second time shown this lactation and on her last outing she was reserve champion at Lincoln Show.

Following in reserve, and the exhibitor-bred champion, was showring-pro Castellhyfryd Spirte Rosina from the Davies family in South Wales. Looking in great form now in her fourth lactation, this super stylish cow became a contender for the topspot after winning a small but high impressive aged cow class. The honourable mention ribbon fell to the jet- black second placed junior cow in-milk Helton Goldwyn Clarisa. A modern, silky cow, she follows in her mother’s footsteps as the daughter of Helton Talent Clarisa EX94, who was reserve champion at this very show in 2009.

Classes

For a show rumoured to not have many Holstein exhibits, nine heifers in-milk impressively came forward to be inspected by Scottish Judge Hugh Neilson of Overside fame. Leading the field was Peachy Ava Tyrol – a heifer that looked just as good stood in the stalls as she did on parade. Power, strength through the front end and ring presence were the key factors that gave her the nod over a matching heifer – Topcroft Sensation Harebell 2 in second.
