Award – Martin Dare Martin Dare has served the South West Dairy Industry for over 30 years, he is highly respected across the industry for his knowledge and professionalism. During this time he has been Club Secretary and Treasurer of the original South West Holstein Friesian Breeders Club, comprising Cornwall, Devon, Dorset and Somerset. Following the merger of HFS and BHS, he then became Secretary of Holstein South West until he retired in 2009 and is President of the Club. Martin was very much involved with the original formation of the South West Dairy Show and his expertise is widely recognised by other cattle breeders which led to him be appointed as the official auctioneer for several Breed Societies. Auctioneer Martin’s day job as an auctioneer, originally with R B Taylor & Sons who merged in the latter years of

his career with Greenslade Taylor Hunt, brought him into contact with a broad range of individuals and issues across agriculture both regionally and nationally. He has without doubt been of enormous benefit to all that he has come into contact with. His first big sale following his father’s death was Messrs Alford’s Whipton herd in the mid 1970s which drew huge crowds. Since then, he has managed major sales across the region; these have included such noted herd dispersals as Bobetty, Crichel, Littlebredy, Sanigar, Trelissick, Terling and Lavenham. In addition he was responsible for founding the tremendous collective sales ‘The Golden Opportunity’ and ‘The Top 10%’ which brought well-bred animals to the attention of the whole country and provided foundation cows for many South West herds. His expertise is widely recognised by other cattle breeders which led to him being appointed as the official auctioneer for several Breed Societies to include the South Western Counties Shorthorn Breeders Society and the Devon Cattle Society. With over 30 years continuous service, Martin has been the Holstein South West’s longest serving Club Secretary and

Treasurer and probably the longest serving of any Club in the UK and is currently the Club’s Vice President. He was very much involved with the formation of a small show in the South West which evolved into one of the most successful regional trade shows being The South West Dairy Show.

Martin has arranged many events in the industry for dairy farmers all over the West Country to include herd visits, competitions, briefings and social gatherings. He also works tirelessly for not-for-profit and charitable organisations. A good example of this being the organisation of the Piers Simon Memorial Sale which was held to raise funds for the appeal set up in remembrance of his former colleague’s son who tragically lost his life in the Tsunami. He is also currently the administrator of the AB Lucas Award which funds study trips for Young Breeders from Somerset, Dorset, Devon and Cornwall.

A modest man, he was completely stunned and delighted to have been nominated by Holstein UK for the Dairy Industry award in 2009. He is the only winner to have ever received a spontaneous standing ovation from the 200+ delegates – a mark of the popularity of this true gentleman.
