Philadelphia has great flight connections to the UK – a new non-stop US Airways service from Edinburgh started in May – but don’t just transit: stop over and enjoy all that the city has to offer. See where America was born as a nation, drive through gorgeous countryside in Pennsylvania and have a flutter in Atlantic City, just an hour away by car. Here are some of the highlights.
Philadelphia In the northeastern corridor that stretches from Boston to Washington DC via New York City, it’s perhaps easy to overlook the City of Brotherly Love as a tourist destination – but that’s a mistake. Visitors can fly directly to Philadelphia
from Heathrow, Manchester and now Edinburgh, or if combining with another east coast city, hop on Amtrak for a quick connection by rail: you’re less than an hour and 20 minutes from downtown Manhattan, for example. Even with a population of 1.5 million, Philadelphia is a compact, friendly place that brings together great food, history – check out the Liberty Bell, the iconic symbol of American independence that was ironically forged in east London – plus street life, bars, museums and, of course, shopping. And the good news is that there’s no tax on clothes and shoes in Philly! Where to start exploring? Perhaps the new Benjamin Franklin Museum, or Independence Hall where the country’s founding fathers came together to sign the Declaration of Independence in

1776. Maybe try the statue of Rocky Balboa where you can run up those steps like Sylvester Stallone – you can’t come to Philadelphia without recreating that classic scene and humming that tune! Luckily those stairs lead to the Philadelphia Museum of Art, but also visit the Rodin Museum (for the largest collection of the sculptor’s work outside Paris), the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, and the Barnes Foundation (the largest collection of impressionist, post-impressionist and early modern art in the world). And a trip to the Philadelphia Zoo is definitely worth it, with or without kids. All of which should build up a healthy appetite – fortunately there are more than 2,500 restaurants and 12 local breweries to sample.
