Dubai’s Mall of the World to house 80 hotels and a theatre district

Rebekah Commane

A theme park, theatres and 80 hotels are to be included in the world’s largest self-contained development, planned for Dubai. The Mall of the World complex

will cover an area larger than 600 football pitches. Its retail area will be four times the size of Gateshead’s Metrocentre – the largest shopping centre in the EU. The four miles of temperature-

controlled promenades will be based on London’s Oxford Street. The mall will also feature a Broadway-style theatre district. The project is to be the retail and

hospitality showpiece development for the emirate’s 2020 Vision and Expo 2020 exhibition, designed with the goal of doubling Dubai’s annual visitor numbers to 20 million in six years.

Dubai ruler Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum said: “The growth in family and retail tourism underpins the need to enhance Dubai’s tourism infrastructure as soon as possible. “Our ambitions are higher than

having seasonal tourism.” As well as the Mall of the World, a 438-hectare district featuring three pavilions is being built near the airport to host Expo 2020.

Bahamas to strengthen links with UK trade

The Bahamas Tourist Office has pledged to reinvigorate its relationship with the UK trade following a restructure and the appointment of two senior officials. Director general Joy Jibrilu is new to tourism, having been appointed in May from the Bahamas Investment Authority. She said: “We want to rebuild

relationships that previously existed, but that we may have lost over the past few years. Romance is the obvious focus: we want to

get the Bahamas known once again as the number-one wedding and honeymoon destination.” The new director for Europe,

Anthony Stuart, who will be based in London, has revealed plans to expand the UK team and engage face-to-face with the trade through roadshows, fam trips and agency visits.

The destination is building on its ‘junkanoo’ tradition, by holding its first carnival, from May 3-8, in a bid to attract off-peak tourism.
