The result is that in one generation, Stratford and major parts of the eastern corridor going through to Central London have been utterly transformed. From being a somewhat unloved railway station, the King’s Cross terminal for HS1 is now a vibrant and bustling hub at the centre of the city and the site for new homes, businesses, commercial properties, and arts and academic centres.

Meanwhile, Stratford has become a major commercial, sports and retail centre boasting one of the largest shopping destinations in Europe. It is also reaping the benefits from a post-Games legacy that will see new parks and properties sited alongside the redeveloped Olympics Village to provide homes that are much- needed in and around the capital. This scheme underlines the
power of ambitious infrastructure investment, which can have long- lasting effects well beyond the parameters of the original concept. Yet without the original ‘Arup Alignment’ and a desire to create more than just a rail link, much that followed may never have come to pass.
Smarter Solutions For decades, Arup has developed and
refined such approaches around the globe. In places such as Hong Kong and Singapore, the firm has worked with city authorities and major developers to design investment models that use land value gains to pay for the infrastructure investment itself. And such broad-based thinking will become even more important in the future. Today, the rise of the Smart City and a new awareness of the role that cities play in addressing major climate change impacts

means that integrated, holistic thinking and planning, design and engineering to create a new urban environment have become more important than ever. There is an awareness that cities can serve not only as engines of growth, but also as engines of change. As a result, Arup is working with clients in China to design eco- cities in places such as Wanzhuang that seek to address some of the major issues around energy, food and water security, while still supporting economically and socially viable communities. In places like Australia and the Philippines, Arup leaders are working with city authorities to help them build more resilient communities with infrastructure that is better equipped to recover rapidly from the inevitable storms, droughts, floods and typhoons. At the same time, the firm is committed to working toward smarter solutions that will not only make the most of technological advances in reducing energy use or increasing water efficiency, but also build healthier and wealthier communities that function at a ‘human scale’. Our work with the city authorities in Copenhagen, for example, provides a great model for how far-sighted integrated thinking that can be used to reinvent and regenerate entire areas of the cities. In this case, helping to discover how a better sewage system could clean up the harbour to the point where the city could create a summer swimming area. There are thousands of examples across the group, but for Arup infrastructure investment always starts from a common theme – the firm’s core mission to ‘Shape a Better World’. This means supporting balanced social, economic and environmental development in all the projects the firm undertakes. But most importantly, it means staying true to a long-term vision that can deliver the cost-effective, flexible solutions that will create the greatest value for all the communities that Arup serves.
