British hospitals and healthcare companies are looking to China to provide new revenue streams.

T

he British healthcare system is well respected across the world. However, the NHS is currently facing a funding

crisis, which is driving hospitals to find other ways to generate income. Healthcare UK, the new joint initiative between the Department of Health, the NHS and UK Trade and Investment (UKTI), has identified international opportunities in China and the Royal Free London NHS Foundation Trust has already taken the opportunity to uncover China’s potential. Spearheading their approach is Alison Shutt, director of international development, who led a delegation from the Royal Free Hospital to Changzhou No2 People’s Hospital in Jiangsu province in April 2012. Representatives of the executive team and 12 consultants visited the hospital and gave lectures. “In our discussions, we compared and contrasted both healthcare institutions. We also

learned about their care pathways and dealing with high volumes of patients,” says Shutt. As a world class organisation with more than 180 years’ experience, the Royal Free is perfectly placed to share a wealth of knowledge and skills that can be beneficial to other organisations and countries. Royal Free International (RFI),

is part of the Royal Free hospital. Using the trust’s extensive experience and expertise, its aim is to work with international partners to improve the quality of services by offering management consultancy, advice and support on hospital development, teaching and training and collaborative research opportunities as well as increase its brand awareness. While one of the drivers is creating new revenue streams, RFI also aims to establish research projects with international partners, allowing doctors to pool resources and share research results. In October 2013 14 doctors, three nurses and one midwife from China visited the Royal Free for a 12 week observership programme. The programme was a direct result of the work done by Healthcare UK and UKTI who took a delegation, headed by government minister Kenneth Clarke, to Zheijiang. “The British healthcare system is the best in the world, and there will be important export opportunities as China invests huge sums of money in its healthcare system over the years ahead,” said Mr Clarke at the time. “As a country, we must play to our strengths if we are to continue to build a healthy, modern economy, and there can be no doubt that exports in this area will play an important part. From building a hospital to training the staff to building the IT and management systems, the UK has the expertise that China needs as it builds a healthcare system that is projected to be spending a trillion dollars every year by 2020.” The Royal Free is a founding member of the academic health science partnership University College London Partners (UCL Partners), one of the world’s leading centres of medical discovery, healthcare innovation, improvement and education. Alison Shutt has been looking at what British hospitals can offer Chinese medical and allied professionals. “On the education front we will push for as many links as possible,” she said. Hospital development, however, is a much longer game plan. “We would aim to work in partnership with other hospitals, but we are a long way off achieving that because of the level and complexity of negotiation and the legal infrastructure that has to be worked out,” she added.

But, with the largest population in the world, many of whom live in urban conglomerations, China offers massive potential to UK healthcare providers.
