designed this resort displaying several references to tropical architecture, with a series of pitch roofs, varying in scale, cascading down to the landscaped gardens. The elevations of the bedroom blocks are articulated by projecting eaves, balconies and vertical towers casting an intricate web of shadows. Elements of water and

landscaping soften the lines of the built forms, helping to integrate them into their luxuriant setting and all construction has been strategically located to minimise impact on the existing mature woodland.

Waterfront developments offer a

particular challenge to the architect: the deep-seated attraction to the human spirit of open water has to be balanced with a respect for its physical power and the harsh conditions for building materials, particularly in a marine environment. A sound

understanding of materials, techniques and design is needed

‘Attention to environmental detail is key to waterfront development as often the location of the property is sensitive to natural surroundings.’

to maintain a sense of connection with the water, while providing spaces that are safe and structures that are resistant to the conditions. Not only leisure but important commercial projects have been undertaken by GMW. Its core services cover architecture, interior design, project management and urban design. In London Globe House was built for Hammerson UK Properties and ‘pre-let’ to British American

Tobacco(BAT) allowing the overlap of base build and fit out works by the same professional team and contractor. The building is located on the banks of the River Thames and has become a landmark on the capital’s riverside skyline. It affords excellent panoramic views across London from the West End to the City. It won the British Council for Offices National Award for most effective fitout in 1999 and GMW was responsible for interior design and fit as well as external building and development. Over in Moscow, GMW Architects International have prepared a master plan and concept design options for a 500,000m2 mixed-use development for Russian residential developer, SU-155. The site is on the Moscow River and is part of a larger development being undertaken by SU-155 just to the west of Moscow. The brief was for an iconic

development to be a focus for the area and provide a broad mix of commercial, residential and leisure uses.

Successful urban design is

founded on an understanding of the commercial, social and political drivers that shape our towns and cities. Each new building contributes to its context, whether this is an urban setting or a natural landscape. Equally, the quality of the space around buildings— especially the public realm—is crucial to the quality of experience. At GMW the work is inspired by a keen interest in urban renewal and a commitment to truly sustainable towns and cities.
