Future Propelled
The Brazilian oil and gas industry relies heavily on British propellers, says Natasha Bowler.
F
ollowing discoveries of ‘light oil’ in the so-called ‘pre-salt layer’ in Brazil, the country is
now producing over two million barrels of oil a day. This has created business opportunities for British companies and the propeller industry is no exception. Whether it’s business or leisure,
having a quality propeller is a must for every boat-owner if you plan to leave the dock. Teignbridge Propellers, based in Devon, are a leading worldwide supplier of custom-made propellers and stern gear with more than 40 years’ experience in the marine industry. Tested in waters around the world from the North Sea to the Pacific, Teignbridge Propellers use the very latest technology in their purpose- built 65,000 sq ft factory. The high quality components designed and manufactured by Teignbridge have been proven in offshore environments around the world
from the North Sea, Gulf of Mexico, West Africa and Persian Gulf to the Pacific. Now the propeller suppliers are working with UK Trade and Investment to increase their profile and sales in Brazil’s emerging market.
Although ranked as the 8th largest country in terms of the world’s oil reserves, Brazil’s national state- controlled oil company Petrobras has faced a number of challenges when trying to exploit oil in the rough waters along the coast of Brazil. Teignbridge is supplying propellors, nozzles, shaftlines, rudders and steering systems for PSV, OSVs and other support vehicles. Much of this will be chartered to Petrobras and deployed in the harsh environment of the South Atlantic Ocean, but Brazil has taken comfort in the study by Plymouth University that shows that the Teignbridge Propellers’ C’Foil design delivers 10% more thrust and 12% greater efficiency compared to standard propellers. For the past two years
Teignbridge has worked closely with UKTI in both Brazil and the UK to develop stronger links with Brazilian companies and to increase business in this expanding market. “UKTI organised the 2013 Naval shore mission which was essential for us to meet potential

customers,” says Mark Phare, Sales and Marketing Director. “I was very pleased with my interactions with the commercial team in Rio. In addition to the scheduled events, the UKTI facilitated other meetings and introductions that made the mission a great success for us. We now see Brazil as one of our best opportunities for the next 10 years.” The propellers are cast in their
foundry in Devon ensuring that Teignbridge Propellers can control the quality of their products from the raw material to the finished parts. The Engineering Department on site tailors every propeller to suit individual tastes and requirements and there are a wide range of different materials available for clients.
“We supply many of the world’s leading boat builders; this is because we custom build propellers for any type of vessel and have a great reputation,” adds Mark. “Our Brazilian contracts are valued in excess of £2m and we plan to build on this success with UKTI’s continuing support.”
