Education - Latest News CIDESCO Ireland launches Colleges form new national section for worldwide awarding body.

A new CIDESCO Ireland section has been established, meaning that colleges, students and therapists alike now have a local connection to the Swiss-based organisation.

The section was ratified and accepted into the CIDESCO family at the Annual CIDESCO Congress held in Wuhan, China last November, and launched – in the presence of CIDESCO president Anna Cari Gund – at the Irish Beauty Show earlier this year.

CIDESCO stands for Comité International d'Esthétique et de Cosmétologie and was founded in 1946 in Brussels with its Head Office in Zurich, Switzerland and since 1957, the CIDESCO qualification has set the standard for beauty therapy qualifications worldwide.

There are 33 CIDESCO sections worldwide and over 230 CIDESCO schools, offering CIDESCO qualifications in beauty therapy, electrical epilation (electrolysis) and aromatherapy, plus recently launched Diplomas in Spa Therapy, Beauty and Spa Management, and Media Make-up. For therapists who are already qualified and would like to up- skill, post graduate CIDESCO diplomas are run throughout the year and studied in conjunction with their working week or other commitments.

“CIDESCO is the most prestigious worldwide qualification in beauty,” Mrs Gund told IB at the section launch. “It is the only ‘holistic’ qualification in beauty therapy which means that you don’t split the body, you study it from top to toe. When it comes to theory and practical, it’s the superior qualification you can get in beauty therapy.”

Gaining a CIDESCO qualification will also assist graduates looking to gain employment, as Mrs Gund explained: “Qualifications are recognised nationally and internationally; it is a higher grade than anything else. If you want to work in your own country, when you apply for work it shows the employer that you are the best, the crème de la crème in beauty therapy. But if you want to broaden your horizons and work internationally, the

qualification can be easily transferred from country to country.”

“Many colleges and education facilities require their staff to be CIDESCO qualified in order to teach in their establishments,” adds CIDESCO Ireland’s Kate Jordan. “It is also a compulsory requirement for the Teaching Council of Ireland in order to register with them and be recognised as a beauty teacher.”

CIDESCO’s Irish section

The non-profit organisation has an elected committee comprising representatives from various CIDESCO colleges throughout Ireland. Regular meetings are held at different venues across the country for representatives from all member CIDESCO colleges to attend.

“The aim of the section is to supply the industry with information on the high CIDESCO standards and increase public awareness of these well revered and internationally recognised diplomas in beauty and spa therapy,” says Kate Jordan.

Although the organisation’s HQ is based in Switzerland, great emphasis is placed on the importance of establishing national sections to ensure that standards are met. “The 33 sections are our representatives around the world as they

know their country much more than we do and we work closely together,” explained Mrs Gund, adding, “CIDESCO, it has been around the world for almost 70 years. It’s all about passion – everyone employed in CIDESCO is there to raise the standards and excellence in beauty therapy. We are like a big family.”

There are over 20 CIDESCO-registered beauty education establishments in the Republic of Ireland which are well dispersed geographically, giving prospective students many options to study.

“An education facility that has been awarded CIDESCO accreditation has gone through a rigorous vetting process set by CIDESCO and ensures that only establishments of the highest standards from an infrastructure, facilities and staff point of view are awarded accreditation,” explains Kate Jordan.
