Thanks to numerous celebrity endorsements, it seems that sunless tans are rarely out of the headlines, but whilst the majority of the coverage seems to focus on spray tanning, the demand for hand-applied sunless tans shouldn’t be underestimated…
“[Manually applied sunless tans] are still a popular choice for many clients as they enjoy the ‘experience’. Unlike spray tanning, which is a quick treatment, the process of manual tanning is more lengthy as the salon will exfoliate the skin before beginning to apply the product. As well as this, the treatment can be relaxing as the lotion is massaged into the skin,” explains Kerry Roberts of Crazy Angel.
Virginie Claire of Virginie Claire Products Ltd agrees: “When it comes to spray tanning, it’s not a process for everyone: they can be quick, cold and impersonal. Clients can also be shy about stripping off and standing in all their glory in front of a therapist, so vive la hand applied tans!
“The client lays down for a relaxing treatment of effleurage strokes where modesty is preserved and comfort is the priority. A therapist can be much more exact with application especially when it comes to tricky areas such as the hands and feet, often the two places where tan is over applied giving a very unnatural look.”
A point of difference
For me, the element of touch is the real point of difference that should be highlighted when marketing a manually applied tan compared to its spray tanning counterpart, as it automatically adds a more luxurious and sensorial dimension to the sunless tanning experience that you just don’t get with spray tanning.

A hand-applied tan in the salon should be a luxurious and relaxing experience.
This, combined with the more discreet nature in which a hand-applied tan is performed, means it is likely to be an ideal treatment for those clients who are looking for an indulgent experience to find some respite from the craziness of the outside world, or for older clients who may be feeling self-conscious about exposing their bodies in a spray tan cubicle, as Jules Heptonstall, St. Tropez Tanning and Skin Finishing Expert explains:
“[For those clients who are] feeling slightly tired, think that their skin is looking grey or that just need a pick me up, a self-tan will lift their complexion, even out their skin tone and disguise signs of fatigue. Your [client’s] body will look slimmer as their silhouette will be darker and any cellulite will appear reduced.”
A helping hand at
home Of course, offering manually applied tans in the salon also provides an ideal retail opportunity for pre-tan exfoliators and moisturisers, retail versions of the tanning products used along with tanning mitts
and applicators, but also post-tan products such as moisturisers and body butters.
When tanning at home, Sandra McClumpha, Global Consultant for Fake Bake, advises that clients should be offered a tanning prescription in accordance to their skin type and lifestyle: “If your [client’s] skin is dry it is always better to use a lotion to nourish the skin, whereas, if it is oily they are better with a spray or gel. [Their] lifestyle can dictate [their] products too, [for example] if your clients are in the gym every day a daily [gradual tan] moisturiser is great, especially if they shower often, but if they like quick results because they do not have time to tan, then a rapid development tan is [the way to go]…”
Whether you’re looking for hand-applied sunless tans to add to your treatment offerings or if you are simply considering them from a retail point of view, it’s good to know what’s on the market.
