Happy feet

That time of year has now returned when we’re forced to kick off our Winter footwear, woolly socks and cosy tights, and unleash our feet back out into the open.

Many of us are often guilty of neglecting this part of our body and as a result our poor tootsies don’t always get the TLC that they truly deserve. During the colder period, it’s easy to hide them away and try to forget about any foot-related concerns that we may have. Yet as the holiday season hits and we begin to dig out those strappy Summer shoes once again, your clients will be turning to you for expert help and advice in order to ensure their feet are in tip-top condition.

As a result, the warmer months present the ideal opportunity for you to adopt a refreshed approach to your foot treatments. So why not ensure they really hit their peak potential by offering your clients prescriptive pedicure services.

Sole to sole

Often well-known for their pampering and relaxing benefits, pedicures have always been a popular beauty ritual and a staple offering seen on salon and Spa menus across the country. Yet this treatment also possesses the ability to go that little bit deeper, and through prescriptive pedicures you can tailor your existing foot services and transform them into a truly bespoke experience.

Most of your clients’ feet will no doubt present some form of foot-related issue, ranging from hard skin and cracked heels through to such problems as brittle toenails and calluses. Although the problems and their severity will vary from case to case, ‘prescribing’ a pedicure based on your client’s personal needs will enable you to truly address their specific health concerns.

“How often do you see you have a pedicure booked in and just do your standard routine almost parrot fashion – soak, cut, file, cuticle work, massage, polish?” asks Marie-Louise Coster, owner of All About Mi Beauty & Holistic Training.

“Yes a pedicure is ultimately judged on the end result of how pretty the nails look but a pedicure is so much more than this alone – it’s about personalising the routine to suit your clients specific requirements and giving her a real treat. This will make your treatment more memorable than the treatment they received from the salon down the road – which in turn will encourage them to come back to you and encourage their friends to do the same.”

Before any prescriptive pedicure treatment takes places, it’s imperative to undertake a thorough client consultation. Here you will be able to assess your client’s condition and thus take the most appropriate course of action based on their needs. “A good consultation for any prescriptive pedicure is essential, as the technician will need to discuss any nail or skin issues with the client, as well as carrying out a visual assessment of the

nails and skin,” explains Rachel Gribble, Salon System Educator. “This will then enable the therapist to design the right course of treatment for that client.”

“Next time your client comes in for her pedicure, discuss with her what she wants to get out of her treatment,” adds Marie-Louise. “Yes she may want lovely painted toe nails but her focus may be on her tired and aching legs needing a longer, more specific massage, or perhaps on her hard skin that has started to become quite stubborn or maybe she has arthritis and wants something to soothe the pain? Whatever her reasons for having a pedicure find this out during the consultation so as you can give her what she considers to be a perfect pedicure.”
