This month Irish Beauty magazine is celebrating its 10th anniversary and the publication of our 100th issue! To commemorate, let us take you through the last decade in the history of Ireland’s leading beauty trade title…

Over the last 10 years, Irish Beauty has established itself as the country’s leading beauty trade title. Throughout the ups and downs of our industry in recent years, IB has weathered the storm and become the go-to title for all professionals.

“Throughout the difficult economic climate that Ireland has faced recently, Irish Beauty magazine has remained the only constant in the entire market. Brands and suppliers have unfortunately come and gone, but over the last 10 years Irish Beauty has remained a staple for every beauty professional and I’m incredibly proud of that,” comments Brett Fairholm, founding publisher of the title.

The first issue of Irish Beauty was published in July 2004. The original concept for the magazine was devised by

former Salon Ireland publisher Brett Fairholm and Editor Amy Ellingham. The two had worked together on Salon Ireland – the country’s first beauty trade title – until its closure following the buyout of its publishing company, and set about creating what would become the voice of industry.

“I was keen to continue delivering a high quality business-to-business magazine to the Irish beauty industry,” Brett recalls. “I was dedicated to helping the flourishing Irish market and believed it was vital to provide an inspirational and truly independent platform for industry communication and commerce.”

"When Brett and I launched Irish Beauty, our humble objective was to break even within three issues and then work our socks off to make it through the year,” explains Amy. “To see the magazine become the market leader within my time as editor, plus become involved in events, awards and industry bodies and spawn a one-off consumer version, remains one of my proudest career achievements. It's - fantastic to know it continues to go from strength to strength.”

From the offset, IB aimed to deliver a diverse and dynamic read for salon and Spa professionals to ensure they remained in touch with the news, views and ideas that mattered to them. The first issue looked at the differences between holistic and high-tech skin care, style statements from Dublin’s Toni and Guy salon and met Creative Academy’s Karen O’Neill and Marina Egan after their win for Best Training at the IBPA 2004 awards.

July 2004 With Amy Ellingham at the helm, the first issue of Irish Beauty magazine is published by Fairtrade Media Ltd, and will be relaunched in its familiar handbag size in December 2005.

Spring 2006 Fairtrade Media Ltd enters the consumer market launching iBeauty – a glossy publication aimed at image- conscious Irish women.

Today, IB prides itself on the variety of treatments and therapies covered, with the aim of introducing therapists and salons to innovative new developments as well as highlighting opportunities to maximise success with existing treatments and salon staples.

Dedicated to beauty

Initially the magazine was aimed at the hair and beauty sectors, but over time the team came to realise that the beauty sector encompassed so many diverse aspects – skin care, nails, tanning, body therapies, Spa treatments, cosmetics etc. – that it deserved a dedicated title.

In the early months of the magazine’s existence, circulation grew to over 5,000 copies distributed to salon owners, therapists, nail techs, Spa directors and managers and tanning operators across the Republic of Ireland. In the following years, the magazine would grow further to reach today’s circulation of 8,000 copies per issue. The magazine is distributed to Associated Irish Therapist (AIT) members as a benefit of their membership package, as well as to working beauty professionals across the country.

“Our business model is such that we have never had to rely on subscriptions to the magazine, meaning we have total control over who the magazine is distributed to,” explains now publisher Dave Horton. “Some trade magazines which operate by paid-for subscriptions actually end up posting their magazines to consumers who have subscribed simply to gain free giveaways.
