ALL WRAPPED UP

Although the world of beauty is constantly evolving, there are many rituals which have truly managed to withstand the test of time. With their roots tracing back to the days of Ancient Greece, Rome and Egypt, the popularity of body wraps still continues to endure.

Although they have naturally evolved over the years, the non-invasive nature and relaxing benefits of body wrapping have enabled the treatment to become a staple addition to salon and Spa menus. From improving skin quality and providing inch- loss results to addressing such issues as cellulite and detoxifying the body, body wraps can offer a wealth of benefits to your entire clientele.

Today, therapists can choose from a wide selection of wrap treatments which are available in several variations depending on the types of products used. However, they all have one core theme in common – wrapping your clients with bandages, plastics or towelling.

Unravelling the process

Most common body wrap treatments begin with the therapist applying a body mask, gel or lotion to the skin. Although these items hold value when used alone, their efficiency is further improved by wrapping the client’s body. This process works to encourage the body’s pores to open, enabling the nourishing ingredients of the product applied to penetrate deeper into the client’s skin.

Wraps are often closely associated with their ability to streamline the silhouette, tightening and toning the figure to provide an overall slimming effect. Yet the treatment also possesses the versatility to provide a host of differing advantages, as Jane Foulton et al outline in their book The Art and Science of Spa & Body Therapy:

• Increased circulation. This helps nourish the skin and improve its appearance.

• Increased perspiration / detoxification. Heat treatments, this draws toxins from the skin and helps speed the flow of the lymph.

• Relaxes tense muscles. The cocoon-like sensation of being covered in warm wrappings helps the client to relax fully.

• Increased absorption. Therapeutic and emollient ingredients from the underlying mask are absorbed more readily into the skin.

“The body has the capability to self-clean and self-heal, when it is overloaded with toxins these processes slow down,” adds Philip Axon, Managing Director of La Cure UK Ltd. “Body wrap treatments usually add heat to help clients sweat and therefore expedite detox.

“A build-up of toxins in the skin puts pressure on the connective tissue and reduces the effectiveness of the blood capillary system,” he continues. “With the application of heat and the process of sweating, pressure on the fatty cells in the subcutaneous layer eases, helping the blood and lymph capillaries to function better. This in turn helps the body eliminate excess fat naturally.

“The benefits of wraps are felt externally in well-toned and hydrated skin that is free from cellulite. They are also felt internally as the body cools down afterwards, the metabolic rate increases and stored fuels such as fat are more readily burned for energy. The effects of this increased metabolism can last for several hours after the treatment.”

Advantages unwrapped

With the wedding and holiday season now in full swing, feeling body confident is always at the forefront of people’s minds during the Summer months. Whether you’re a Spa location, salon or a mobile therapist on-the-go, wraps can offer your business a flexible treatment option.

For many of your clients, the non-invasive nature of body wraps will undoubtedly be their major appeal. “Compared to other inch-loss procedures, this is both a soothing and calming treatment that is not invasive and does not involve [such

technologies as] Lasers,” comments Lydia Sarfati, Repêchage CEO and Founder. “Given this is an all-natural procedure, the client will feel comfortable with the experience.”

In order to achieve maximum results, a series of treatments is often recommended which is great news for boosting your bottom line. However, remember to advise your clients during their initial consultation of the importance that such factors as a sensible exercise regime and dietary plan will have on the overall end results. “It is important to manage client expectations and set ‘SMART’ (specific, measurable, achievable, realistic and time bound) objectives at the beginning,” expalins Philip. “Equally important is the choice of products, correct measuring and wrap application techniques for the overall effectiveness of the treatment.”
